Satariel is a Swedish death metal band from Boden that was formed in 1993. The band borrowed its name from the Kabbalah .

history

The band was formed in 1993 from what was left after the breakup of the groups Beheaded and Dawn Of Darkness. In particular, they were the singer Pär “Aemelgoth” Johansson, the guitarist Magnus “Azazel” Alakangas and the bassist Mikael “Asael” Grambacke aka Mikael Degerman. Work on the first songs began with a drum computer . After drummer Mikael Granqvist joined, the 1993 demo titled Thy Heavens' Fall was recorded. Mats Öhmalm can then be heard as guitarist, who left the line-up shortly after the release. Impure Creations Records became aware of the group through the demo , but the label was unable to agree on a contract with the band. After Granqvist left the band in 1995, Andreas “Astaroth” Nilzon joined as the new drummer. The band then recorded a second, better-produced demo called Desecration Black (1994), with which they could not achieve a record deal. Meanwhile, the band played gigs with At the Gates . In 1995 Fredrik “Thorn” Andersson joined the band as guitarist and another demo was recorded with Hellfuck . Through the demo Promo 96 , which contains three songs, the band reached a contract with Pulverized Records . The band also had to take a break because Sundelin and Degerman had to do their military service. Work on the debut album then began, before Nilzon left the line-up in 1996 and drummer Robert "Zoid" Sundelin took his place. Before the recordings, the former drummer Granqvist returned to the band, but he now occupied the previously repeatedly changing position of second guitarist. After the album was recorded in 1997 with producer Tomas Skoksberg at Sunlight Studios , it was released after some delay in 1998 on Pulverized Records under the name Lady Lust Lilith . 1999 and 2000 the band was only moderately active, after which Robert Sundelin took care of his project Deathbound . Johansson broke the contract with Pulverized Records and in the winter of 2000 wrote new songs with Alakangas, which were sent to various labels. The band then signed a contract with Hammerheart Records . The album Phobos and Deimos , named after the Mars moons Deimos and Phobos , was recorded in Uppsala with producer Daniel Bergstrang and released in February 2002. Messiah Marcolin (Ex- Candlemass , Memento Mori ) is included as a guest singer . The publication was followed by a few appearances and a European tour in January 2003 with Impious and Necrophobic . In the same year Johansson and Degerman Torchbearer joined, but were also active at Satariel and wrote new songs there. After the group split from Hammerheart Records, they signed a contract with Black Lotus Records . In late March 2004, Dug Out Studios began work on the next album, which was titled Hydra . Daniel Bergstrand was once again the producer for this, this time with support from Örjan Örnkloo . The work lasted a total of six months. After these were over, the label announced its bankruptcy, whereupon the album was released in June 2005 on Cold Records / Regain Records . In the USA , however, the publication did not take place until spring 2006. In February 2006 Satariel returned to Pulverized Records and released there, after the work had been completed in May of the following year, the EP Chifra in September. The EP includes the band's first music video, which was created for the song Hogtied Angel . A little later, Granqvist announced his departure, before Simon Johansson, who had contributed a few solos on Hydra , joined as the new guitarist the following month . At the end of the year, the recordings for the album White Ink were finished, the release of which was originally planned for spring 2008 on Regain Records. However, the EP was released in 2014 Satariel - White Ink: Chapter One , which is the first of three parts of the yet to be released album White Ink .

Style and texts

laut.de wrote about the group that the songs of the early phase, in which the drum computer was still used, sounded alot like old songs by Darkthrone . With the arrival of the drummer Mikael Granqvist, she moved away from Black Metal to Death Metal. Phobos and Deimos is more based in Melodic Death Metal . Joel McIver also assigned the initial music of the group in his book Extreme Metal II to Black Metal. Daniel Ekeroth wrote in his book Swedish Death Metal that the group played a mixture of old-school death metal, melodic electric guitars and doom metal , which, however, sounded a bit unoriginal and artificial. According to Janne Stark in his book The Heaviest Encyclopedia of Swedish Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Ever! You can hear technically demanding, powerful and occasionally melodic Death Metalon Phobos and Deimos , whichsoundslike a mixture of early In Flames and late Entombed . The album is a mixture of very fast and slow, almost Doom Metal-like passages. The first album, however, consists almost entirely of fast songs. Stefan Müller from Metal Hammer found in his review of Phobos and Deimos that "apart from a few screeching vocal interludes" the initial Darthrone influences are no longer audible on the album. Instead, there is a mixture of classic Swedish Death Metal and modern elements thatwould remind you of Devin Townsend several times. He summarized the music as a “multi-layered sound journey from In Flames to Strapping Young Lad ”, whereby influences from Gothic Metal and Heavy Metal are also occasionallyprocessed. At the time of her album Hydra , Pär Johansson said: “Yes, we have integrated a lot of stylistic devices into our sound. From lava to high speed, everything is included. Aggressive, depressed, intense ... ".

Johansson doesn't want “the cliché of an occult , satanic band to arise” because of the name Satariel and his interest in Kabbalah, which flows into the band's lyrics . The band members are all anti-Christian, “but don't want to overemphasize this aspect or exploit it as a marketing measure. It's childish. You should concentrate more on the music. ”With the band, he“ really just wanted to have fun with it. That's enough for me, no more, no less. ” Johansson relates the title of the Hydra album to the dark side of Kabbalah and, in simplified terms, identifies it with Satan . The common thread that runs through the album is about “human will. What is this abstract thing? Does the human will really exist? Or is all we do fate? Or is that what we interpret as our will, perhaps God's or even evil's will? What really shapes our life? Some of our texts get to the point, others are a bit more shadowy. Ultimately, the listener should be given the opportunity to interpret. ”On the Chifra- EP, the texts deal with comparable topics.
