Savile "Bill" William Francis Crossley, 3rd Baron Somerleyton GCVO , DL (born September 17, 1928 , † January 24, 2012 in Herringfleet ) was a British peer .

life and career

He was born on September 17, 1928 to Francis Savile Crossley, 2nd Baron Somerleyton and Bridget Hoare. He attended Eton College . Immediately afterwards he served in the Coldstream Guards from 1947 .

There he became commander in 1948 and captain in 1956 . As such, he finished his military service. During this time he served in Palestine , Tripoli , Egypt , Cyprus and inland.

He retired at the age of 28 and attended the Royal Agricultural College , Cirencester . He then worked for a year at Raveningham Farms , near Loddon , and a year in Australia , New Zealand and America .

Crossley was a county councilor in East Suffolk . He later entered the civil service.

From 1978 to 1991 Crossley was a non-political lord-in-waiting to HM The Queen . He was Master of the Horse from 1991 until his retirement in 1998 . Since 1977 he has been President of the Lowestoft Management Group .

Crossley also worked as a farmer and was a landowner. Since the death of his father in 1959, he ran the family estate. He was the patron ( patron ) of One Living . Until his retirement in 1997, he was a director of Essex and Suffolk Water plc .

Membership in the House of Lords

When his father died in 1959, he inherited the title of Baron Somerleyton and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . There he sat as a crossbencher . He first took his seat on October 20, 1959. He gave his inaugural address on April 3, 1968 on the subject of the shipping industry . In the following years he did not speak up there. He spoke again on two occasions in May 1976, first on the Anglian Water Authority Bill and later on the water industry in England and Wales.

He last spoke up on the Falkland Islands on April 20, 1977 , after speaking on the Water Charges Equalization Bill that same year . He lost his seat through the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Honors

In 1964 he became Deputy Lieutenant of Suffolk . Crossley became Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1994 and Knight Grand Cross of the same Order in 1998 in recognition of his service to the monarchy.

Family and death

He married Belinda Maris Loyd in 1963, daughter of Captain Vivian Loyd. Together they have a son and four daughters.

Crossley died on January 24, 2012 at the age of 83 after a prolonged suffering from Alzheimer's disease . His son Hugh Francis Savile (* 1971) inherited his title of nobility as the 4th Baron Somerleyton.
