Savusavu is a city in Fiji with 7034 inhabitants (as of 2007). It is located in the southern part of the island of Vanua Levu in the province of Cakaudrove of the Northern Division .

It is one of 11 urban areas in Fiji and was incorporated as Town in 1969. Town and the surrounding area with some villages ( koro ) form an agglomeration (city region). Savusavu has been an important port city for Vanua Levu since the 19th century . The area is located on a headland lying north on Savusavu Bay and south on Somosomo Strait , 15 km from Taveuni Island .

Upstream is Nawi Island with two smaller islands, which are managed as a private island by Nawi Island Limited , in particular for the expansion of a marina . Savusavu is known for its thermal springs , as a marina and as a diving area.

Infrastructure

Savusavu can be reached by ship, ferry boat and Savusavu Airport , 3.1 km to the south, to which Nadi and Suva fly. The connecting road is the Hibiscus Highway, which joins the Cross Island Road in Savusavu. The closest larger city is Labasa, about 55 km away in the north .

City administration

The highest body is the Savusavu Town Council , consisting of 9 city councils. After the dismissal of all city councils and mayors by the military administration of Frank Bainimarama in 2009, the Fiji Indian Vijay Chand was appointed special administrator for the cities of Labasa and Savusavu.
