Schöneberg (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The noble lords of Schöneberg (also von Schonenberg ) appeared in northern Hesse in the High Middle Ages . It was extinguished in the male line in 1419.

history

In the 12th century, the lords of Schöneberg were castle men and fiefs of the Archbishopric Mainz at Castle Schöneberg near Hofgeismar , and this became their ancestral seat. In the 13th century they tried to build up their own rule in the vicinity of their ancestral home by acquiring property and maintaining their relationships with the surrounding counties. In doing so, however, they came into conflict with the secular interests of the Archbishoprics of Mainz and Paderborn as well as with the Landgraviate of Hesse . As early as the middle of the 13th century they had to accept the Counts of Dassel into the administration of their ancestral castle. In 1272 the Schöneburg was sold to the Archdiocese of Mainz under pressure from the city of Hofgeismar. Thereupon the Schönebergers switched to the Trendelburg . In 1429, Landgrave Ludwig I of Hesse bought her remaining goods on the Diemel .
