The beautiful squill ( Scilla amoena ), also called beautiful star hyacinth, belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). This plant species, which is believed to come from West Asia , is one of the neophytes in Central Europe .

features

The beautiful squill is a perennial herbaceous bulb that reaches heights of 15 to 25 centimeters. The one to three stems are angular and compressed. The usually four to five (rarely three), basal, light green, elongated leaves are often reddish at the bottom, 20 to 30 centimeters long and 1.2 to 1.8 centimeters wide.

The mostly four to six (rarely from one or up to 15) flowers are grouped together in a loose, racemose inflorescence . The bracts are 1 to 2 millimeters long. The lower flower stalks are 10 to 20 millimeters long. The flowers are upright and spread out in a star shape. The bracts are light blue and have a dark central nerve, at the base they are whitish. Your inside is darker blue. They are 10 to 12 millimeters long and 4 to 5 millimeters wide. The seeds are more or less spherical and have a diameter of 3 millimeters. There is no oil body.

The flowering period extends from March to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12.

Occurrence

The beautiful squill probably comes from northern Turkey. It was naturalized in France, the Balkans, Romania and locally also in Central Europe (in Bavaria, on Lake Constance, in Styria and in Silesia) in gardens, park meadows and fresh mixed deciduous forests.

The beautiful squill is used as an ornamental plant in borders, borders and rock gardens. It used to be cultivated more often. It is an old ornamental plant of the Orient .
