The 1998 Senior World Chess Championship was an international chess tournament that took place from November 8th to 21st, 1998 in Grieskirchen , Austria .

The Senior World Championship was organized by FIDE and the Austrian Chess Federation.

197 men and women took part in the open world championship won by Vladimir Bagirov . The separate championship for 22 women was won by Tamar Chmiadashvili , who became world champion before the last round.

The organization was in the hands of the Grieskirchen chess club.

Referees were Werner Stubenvoll for the open championship and Gertrude Wagner for the women's tournament.

Harald Grafenhofer from the organizing club conducted interesting interviews with Bagirow, Baumgartner, Braun, Erenska, Chmiadaschwili, Klovans, Kraidman, Lein, Taimanow and Uhlmann.
