Tamar Chmiadashvili ( Georgian თამარ ხმიადაშვილი ; born November 27, 1944 in the Georgian SSR ; † before November 2, 2019 ) was a Georgian chess player and referee. At FIDE international chess tournaments she was also called Tamar, Tamara or Tamari Khmiadashvili. She is the most successful player in the senior world chess championships , has won the title of world champion five times and came in second seven times.

Life

Tamar Chmiadashvili comes from Georgia , the home of world champions Nona Gaprindashvili and Maia Chiburdanidze . She studied German in Tbilisi and spoke good German. In an interview by Harald Grafenhofer with her at the Senior World Championships in 1998 in Grieskirchen, she said: "I live in the capital Tbilisi and work as a chess trainer for the chess federation. Some of my students have already won titles at youth world championships." Since 2007 she has been a chess referee for FIDE.

She won the individual championship of women of the Georgian SSR three times: 1972, 1975 and 1978.

In 1998 in Grieskirchen , Austria, she became the senior world champion. Before that, she had already taken part in the senior world chess championships three times (1995 and 1996 in Bad Liebenzell , and 1997 in Bad Wildbad ), where she took second place. In Gladenbach she became world champion for the second time at the senior chess championship in 1999 .

Because of her success in Grieskirchen, she was awarded the title of Grand Master of Women (WGM) in 1998.

Between 1999 and 2008 she took part in 9 other senior world championships: 1999 first place in Gladenbach , 2000 second place in Rowy , Poland, 2001 in Arco (Trentino) , Italy, 2002 second place in Naumburg (Saale) , 2003 first Place in Bad Zwischenahn , 2004 second place in Halle (Saale) , 2006 second place in Arvier , Italy, as well as 2007 in Gmunden , Austria and 2008 in Bad Zwischenahn.

At a senior tournament in the framework of the 2008 Chess Olympiad in Dresden , she was the best female participant (5th place out of 125 participants). Grandmaster Yair Kraidman from Israel won.

In 2010 in Arco (Trentino) she was able to win the Senior World Championship for women again . In 2016 she was third behind Nona Gaprindaschwili and Jelena Fatalibekowa in Marienbad . In November 2017, Chmiadashvili won the Senior World Championship in Acqui Terme for women 65+.
