The Schelenburg in Schledehausen is a moated castle and one of the oldest castles in space Osnabrück in Lower Saxony .
history
The castle was mentioned for the first time in 1160, but is estimated to date back to the 11th century. Its oldest part is the Gothic residential tower . It has a wall thickness of 2.5 meters and stands on oak piles. In the Middle Ages it was surrounded by water all around and could only be reached via a ladder to the first floor. The former multiple staggered ditch system around the castle is still partially preserved today.
Until the end of the 14th century, the castle was the ancestral seat of the noblemen of Sledesen. In 1396 the castle passed to the von Schele family after Rabodo von Schele married the heiress Elisabeth von Sledesen. Since then the castle has remained in the family's possession, the forest property is now managed by Joachim Kellermann von Schele.
In 1490 a fire destroyed residential and farm buildings, the massive residential tower was spared. From 1500 to 1532 a renaissance building in quarry sandstone was built on the foundation walls of the burned down house . The well-known South German builder Jörg Unkair completed the building in the Weser Renaissance style . The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Hanover Eduard von Schele zu Schelenburg was born at Schelenburg Castle in 1805 .
The castle has been thoroughly renovated since the mid-1980s, including a new roof. The main room of a restaurant is located in the old castle kitchen. The restaurant is located in a cross vault. The normal catering business was closed on December 31, 2011. To the outside, the terrace adjoins the moat. Inside, another guest room with a barrel vault forms the transition to the Gothic part of the castle. A hall on the upper floor of the Gothic tower is available for events. Underneath was a room for weddings. Weddings were held here by the Bissendorf registry office until December 31, 2011.
The moated castle is a tourist attraction of the community of Bissendorf and its district Schledehausen (named after the noble Sledesen family). It is located about 12 kilometers east of Osnabrück between Wiehengebirge and Teutoburg Forest on the county road 324 ( Osning route ) just before the western entrance to Schledehausen.
local community
Schelenburg also existed as a municipality until it was incorporated into the municipality of Bissendorf, which took effect on July 1, 1972.
