The umbrella mosses ( Splachnum ) are a genus of deciduous mosses from the Splachnaceae family .
features
The mosses have broadly ovate to rarely lanceolate, entire or serrate leaves with a simple rib ending in front of the leaf tip. The seta is long and thin, the theca (urn, part of the spore capsule that contains the spores) ovoid to short cylindrical, the apophysis (capsule neck) usually inflated, ovoid to umbrella-shaped and differently colored than the theca: whitish, yellow, reddish, purple or blackish. The columella (central column in the spore capsule) protrudes beyond the capsule mouth after the lid has been removed. Peristome teeth are usually connected in pairs.
The species usually settle on animal dung in bogs .
