Schismocarpus pachypus is the only species of the Schismocarpus plant genus withinthe nettle family (Loasaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

In Schismocarpus pachypus it is a shrub which consists of an underground Xylopodium makes annual shoots.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The simple leaf blade is broadly ovate to approximately circular with a serrated edge.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescences are terminal and thyrse-like , typically with a dichasium on the outside and in addition a monochasial paracladia . In front of the hanging single flowers are two bract-like bracts .

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are fused and hairy long. The five petals are green or white, narrow-egg-shaped or egg-shaped with a pointed upper end, membranous and flat. There are only two circles with five stamens each, five longer and five shorter. Staminodes are absent. The ovary is medium sized. The scar is lobed in five parts.

The stalked, egg-shaped capsule fruit opens by means of five flaps at the top of the fruit. The seeds are egg-shaped.

Schismocarpus pachypus is endemic to the Mexican state of Oaxaca .

Systematics

The first description of Schismocarpus pachypus was made in 1918 by Sidney Fay Blake Contributions from the Gray Herbarium of Harvard University. Cambridge, Volume 53, Pages 62-63 and with it the genus Schismocarpus was established. Schismocarpus pachypus is the only species of the genus Schismocarpus in the subfamily Mentzelioideae within the family Loasaceae .
