The Battle of Martorell was a military conflict between the Muslim Almoravids and allied Christian armies that was fought in Catalonia in 1114 .

prehistory

The Iberian Peninsula in 1150

After the reign of El Cid in the Taifa of Valencia (Balansiya) in 1099 came to an end, the Almoravids were able to launch campaigns against the counties of Barcelona , Urgell and Cerdanya as well as against the Kingdom of Aragón . In 1114 a large army under the command of Muhammad ibn Aisha started moving north from Valencia and was later reinforced by Muhammad ibn al-Hajj , the governor of Saragossa . The united army then moved in the direction of Lérida , crossedUrgell and the Segarra and finally reached the plains of Barcelona . In the meantime, the Almoravids stationed in the Balearic Islands had landed in the Besòs Delta and were preparing to attack Barcelona, destroying Sant Adrià de Besòs and Sant Andreu de Palomar along the way .

Course of the battle

In Martorell , about 20 kilometers west of Barcelona , more precisely at the Congost de Martorell pass , the collision occurred between August 5 and September 3, 1114. Martorell himself owned a fort, the garrison of which was commanded by Udalard Ramon de Rosanes . The place was evacuated and then moved into the united troops, commanded by Raimund Berengar III. and the Counts of Urgell ( Ermengol VI. ) and Cerdanya ( Bernat I. ), position.

The Christian armies retained the upper hand in the course of the battle, routed the Almoravid army and pursued it along the Mediterranean coast to Salou .

Result

The victory averted the threat of a siege on Barcelona and in return enabled the Catalans to attack Balaguer later and initiate a campaign against Lleida in 1116 .
