The castle Étoges ( French Château d'Étoges ) is a moated castle in the French commune of the same name in the Marne department of the Grand Est region . It has been under monument protection as Monument historique since 1956 .

history

The beginnings of the castle go back to the 12th century. Eustache III. de Conflans, Marshal of Champagne at the time and advisor to the king, built a fortification on the edge of a mountain slope, probably surrounded by a ditch fed with water from existing springs. Since Eustache's children died at a young age, his sister Marguerite de Conflans brought the estate of Étoges as heir to the marriage with Ogre III d'Anglure, a knight in the service of the Duke of Orléans .

In 1572, Antoinette d'Anglure married the Chamberlain of the Duke of Alençon , Chretien de Savigny. Savigny was ruler of Châlons and lieutenant of the king in Champagne. Her son Charles Saladin de Savigny (1573-1616) also carried on the name d'Anglure. His heir, Antoine Saladin d'Anglure de Savigny, Baron von Rosne, received the French King Louis XIII in 1632 . in Etoges. He was field marshal of the king and was elevated to the rank of count in 1656 . Reason enough to redesign Castle Étoges from 1661 on the medieval foundations. The portrait of his son Marc Antoine Saladin d'Anglure du Bellay de Savigny, Count of Étoges, can still be found in the castle. With his heir, Charles Nicolas, the line of the gentlemen from the Anglure family ends.

In 1718 the county changed hands with 1500  hectares of land and forest. The son of the Marshal of France , Louis-François de Boufflers , became the new landlord of Étoges. Bouffler moved the castle entrance to the south. In 1725 the old drawbridge collapsed under the weight of Queen Maria Leszczyńska's carriage . Bouffler then had a new stone bridge with four arches designed, which is still in use today.

In the 18th century, the owners changed in mostly short succession. In 1803 the Comte François Scholastique de Guéhéneuc acquired the castle. Through his daughter Louise-Antoinette, who was married to Marshal Jean Lannes for the second time , it came to their sons and descendants.

The family of today's castle owners acquired the complex at the end of the 19th century and now operates a hotel with a restaurant.
