The Örebro Castle ( Swedish Örebro slott ) is a on an island in the river Svartån situated castle in the Swedish town of Örebro , whose origins lie in the 13th century and received its present appearance in the 19th century.

history

The time when the foundation stone was laid for Örebro Castle is unknown. In the 18th century, Andreas Olavi Rhyzelius , Bishop of Linköping , wrote about a castle built in the middle of the 13th century. Probably the oldest part of the castle is a medieval stone building, which was later supplemented by a defense tower and was surrounded by a circular wall.

It is known for certain that a larger fortification was built in the middle of the 14th century, possibly by King Magnus Eriksson . This consisted of three three-story long houses , which were arranged in a U-shape around the old fortified tower, and was given the name Örebro hus .

In the period that followed, Örebro hus was heavily disputed and changed hands several times. In 1364 Albrecht von Mecklenburg captured the castle of Örebro together with the castle of Sundby . In 1434 the castle of Örebro went to Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson . A peasant army besieged the castle in 1501. After seven months Svante Sture was able to take it. His son Sten Sture succeeded him as lord of the castle. In 1520 the castle was conquered by Christian II, King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden in his war against the Swedish nobility . A year later, in 1521, Gustav Wasa besieged Örebro Castle in the battle for the Swedish throne and was able to win it after nine months.

After Gustav Wasa's death, his youngest son and later king, Duke Karl inherited the Örebro hus . In 1573 he initiated an extensive renovation and expansion, which was not completed until 1625. Thus, the transformed Örebro hus for slott Örebro a modeled, French -inspired Renaissance castle. Between 1606 and 1617 six diets were held at Örebro Castle .

In the following years the castle fell into disrepair. It was not restored until the 1750s according to plans by the palace architect Carl Johan Cronstedt . It was given a classicist shape. In 1810 the castle served as the residence of Charles XIII. of Sweden in the election of Charles XIV of Sweden as Crown Prince.

Örebro slott was also used as the seat of the Landshövding of Örebro län , but also served as a prison (with Lasse-Maja as the most famous inmate), arsenal and granary .

In the late 19th century, Örebro Castle was rebuilt in the style of national romanticism and received its current appearance. It has been a monument ( Byggnadsminne ) since 1935 .
