Calberwisch Castle
The Calberwisch Castle is a castle in the Calberwisch district of the Hanseatic city of Osterburg (Altmark) in Saxony-Anhalt .
location
It is located at the southern entrance to the village.
architecture
The Wilhelminian style brick building consists of nine axes. It has two floors on a basement with an H-shaped floor plan and an outside staircase on the garden side. In the style of historicism , the facade is structured by plaster and clinker.
history
An older building made of wood with solid foundation walls was restored in 1692 and demolished in 1839 due to dilapidation .
The palace was rebuilt in 1875 under Bernhard von Jagow , Rittmeister of the Potsdam "Garde du Corps", and his wife Johanna, daughter of Count Pourtalés, in the neo-Renaissance style. The architects were Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden (Berlin). It is therefore of supraregional importance. It fits into Gropius' series of numerous designs for villas in Berlin and the surrounding area.
After the owner family fled in 1945, it was used, among other things, to accommodate war refugees, as a day-care center, as a supermarket and a youth club. From 1995 to 2014 there was a restaurant with guest rooms. The branch office of the registry office in Osterburg was also given up.
Todays use
The castle and the surrounding park cannot be visited. The castle is used exclusively for private residential purposes.
