Ebersberg Castle

Ebersberg Castle , also called Ebersberg Castle , is the educational and meeting place of the German Scouting Society Saint Georg (DPSG) in the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart . Ebersberg Castle is located in the municipality of Auenwald in the Rems-Murr district east of the Ebersberg and Lippoldsweiler suburbs on a mountain spur.

history

The remains of the Hohenstaufen castle Ebersberg lie above the Auenwald suburbs of Ebersberg and Lippoldsweiler. Construction of the castle began at the beginning of the 12th century; it was first mentioned in 1226. After the family of the noble lords of Ebersberg, who owned the castle around 1300, died out, the castle frequently changed hands. In 1551 the two-wing castle was added, the remains of which can be seen in today's building. The Schöntal (Jagst) monastery became the new owner of the castle estate in 1698. In 1714 a fire destroyed almost the entire palace complex. In its current, baroque form, the castle was built by the Cistercian monastery in Schöntal around 1720 after this devastating fire. The Chapel of St. Michael was established in 1724. In 1786 the Schöntal Monastery sold the castle to the Duke of Württemberg Carl Eugen after the monks had left . A condition for the sale was that the duke had to recognize the elevation to the Catholic parish, the undisturbed exercise of faith of the subjects as well as the maintenance of the church in the castle and the pastor. By Section 31 of the Osnabrück Peace Treaty of 1648, the Duke of Württemberg was forced to behave in this way under imperial law. This also explains why the place Ebersberg is the only one in the Protestant area to have a Catholic character.

DPSG educational institution

With the construction of the Catholic Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Ebersberg, the castle became the property of the diocese in 1962. On June 17, 1963 the castle was handed over to the German Scouting Society of St. George. With a lot of personal work, the castle was renovated in a first construction phase from 1964 to 1965 and inaugurated as a new youth castle on May 21, 1966 by Bishop Carl Joseph Leiprecht . According to plans in the 80s and 90s - in agreement with the State Monuments Office and with the diocese - from 1995 the castle was rebuilt and fundamentally renovated. In 1996 the new castle was reopened. In a further construction phase in 1998, the work was completed. The house now has 64 beds and is a so-called self-catering house.
