Backnang Castle
Backnang Castle is a 17th century castle in Backnang in the Rems-Murr district in Baden-Württemberg .
history
Today's castle is located on the site of the former Augustinian monastery . After the monastery was abolished in 1593, Duke Friedrich von Württemberg soon came up with plans for a new building, which was to be built by the court architect Heinrich Schickardt as the Württemberg widow's residence. According to Schickhardt's plans, the palace was planned as a three-story building with a north and east wing. A bell tower was to be built over the hipped roof with the dwelling houses at the ridge crossing. However, the construction work started in 1605 was slow and in 1622 came to a complete standstill. At the urging of the duke, the building was completed in its current form in 1627, but the planned east wing was dispensed with. The castle was also badly damaged by the city fire in 1693. In 1704 the building, which had not yet been restored, became a fruit box. In the years 1875 to 1877 the building was redesigned and expanded as the building became the seat of the administration of the Backnang District Office . During these renovations, u. a. the old lattice windows of the building were restored and the approx. 20 meter high stair tower on the southwest corner was torn down. Instead, two flat risalits were added to the building on the southwest side to make space for staircases.
Today the district court of the city of Backnang is located in the former castle.
