location

Katharinenhof Castle is located on the northern edge of the Backnang district on an elevation ( Katharinenbuckel ) on federal road 14 near Oppenweiler in the Rems-Murr district in Baden-Württemberg . The former palace park was designed as an English landscape park in keeping with the zeitgeist of the time and is bordered by a wall and some staffage buildings . In addition to a large population of trees and a few farm buildings, it contains sculptures and relief steles. In the southern part of the castle there is a memorial with an open chapel and memorial plaques of the industrialist family Reusch, who came from the Moravian Ostrava .

While the Katharinenhof is politically part of the Strümpfelbach district of the city of Backnang, it is an ecclesiastical branch that belongs to the Protestant parish of Oppenweiler.

history

Katharinenhof Palace was built in 1847 for Prince Friedrich of Württemberg and his wife Katharina as a hunting lodge . It is designed as a two-storey rectangular building in the late classical style, with several risalits under a flat hipped roof with belvedere.

In 1916 the castle was acquired by the Oberhausen industrial manager Paul Reusch , who used it as his estate. Paul Reusch regularly bought or commissioned works of art and thus a. the park around Katharinenhof Palace was also decorated (e.g. relief stele Eduard Mörike , made 1954–55 by the Munich sculptor Josef Meinert based on a design by Bernhard Bleeker ). Paul Reusch died on December 21, 1956 in Katharinenhof Palace, his son Hermann Reusch also died on December 17, 1971 in Katharinenhof Palace.

Katharinenhof Palace has been owned by the Stuttgart entrepreneur and monument protector Peter Seydelmann since 1993 . He endeavors to create a refuge for endangered animals and plants in the old castle park and in the adjacent, newly acquired areas. He tries to compensate for a lack of soil quality by adding more soil. A partial opening of the park was originally announced, today the park area is completely fenced, including the memorial of the Reusch family, which was once open to the public.

In 2008, Katharinenhof Palace was the venue for the Backnang Business Talks .

Landscape protection area

The former castle park was designated as a landscape protection area Katharinenhof (protection area number 1.19.038) by ordinance of the Backnang District Office of 15 April 1971 with a size of 21.8 hectares .
