Prince Friedrich of Württemberg (1808-1870).

Prince Friedrich Karl August von Württemberg (born February 21, 1808 on the Comburg near Schwäbisch Hall , † May 9, 1870 in Stuttgart ) was a Württemberg general of the cavalry and father of King Wilhelm II of Württemberg .

Life

Friedrich was the eldest son of Prince Paul von Württemberg and his wife Charlotte von Sachsen-Hildburghausen , a daughter of Duke Friedrich von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (or from 1826 Altenburg ). Prince Friedrich was born in his temporary residence, the former Comburg knight's monastery near Schwäbisch Hall. His grandfather was the first King Friedrich I of Württemberg , his uncle the second King Wilhelm I.

Friedrich embarked on a befitting military career in the Württemberg army , received the rank of Rittmeister II class at the age of fifteen , was colonel of the infantry in 1832 and in 1841 achieved the rank of lieutenant general of the cavalry . In 1865 King Karl I promoted him to general of the cavalry and commander in chief of the Württemberg Federal Army Corps. In the German war of 1866 against Prussia , however, he did not hold a field command, but experienced him as a liaison officer in the headquarters of the Austrian field witness .

Due to his parentage, Prince Friedrich was a member of the First Chamber of the Württemberg State Parliament , in whose meetings he also took part. In 1865 his nephew King Karl appointed him to the Privy Council . He lived mainly in a palace in Stuttgart and in the Katharinenhof hunting lodge near Oppenweiler .

Princess Katharina of Württemberg (1821–1898)

On November 20, 1845, he married his cousin Princess Katharina von Württemberg (1821–1898), a daughter of King Wilhelm I. He ignored the wishes of his father, who refused the marriage. The only child from this connection was Prince Wilhelm , born in Stuttgart in 1848 , who became King of Württemberg in 1891 as Wilhelm II.

Friedrich von Württemberg died on May 9, 1870 in Stuttgart of an ulcer , which was probably the late consequence of a facial injury sustained in a hunting accident. He was buried in the crypt of the palace chapel of Ludwigsburg Palace .
