The Hoym Castle is a Grade II listed building in the town of Hoym a district of Seeland in Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments , the castle is listed as a historical building under registration number 094 95051 .

history

Hoym Castle stands on the remains of a former moated castle , of which hardly anything has come down historically and of which only a few traces have been preserved, which was probably built in 1038. The moated castle was the ancestral seat of those von Hoym , who were first mentioned in 1191 with Berchtoldus de Hoym . The castrum mentioned in Hoym in 1301 is assumed to be an older building. The palace complex has belonged to the Anhalt-Bernburg noble family since 1603 . The existing moated castle was demolished in 1714. For Leberecht , a son of Prince Victor Amadeus von Anhalt-Bernburg , a befitting baroque palace was built by Johann Tobias Schuchardt until 1721, at the same time as the so-called, also listed, Prinzenhaus . With the new building, Hoym became the residence of the Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg-Hoym. From 1836 to 1863 Wilhelm von Kügelgen lived in the castle as chamberlain of Duke Alexander Karl von Anhalt-Bernburg , who was the residence of the castle from 1855 to 1863. Wilhelm Kügelgen wrote his memoirs here, which have become part of the German cultural heritage. On April 1, 1878, the state hospital opened in the castle. In the last quarter of the 19th century, the park with the pavilion-like residential and therapy buildings was created. The castle has been used as a disabled facility since 1978, the largest in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

The single-storey west wing is the so-called chamber house. The courtyard portal, which forms the entrance to the palace area, is a baroque complex, crowned by a half-length of Prince Victor Amadeus von Anhalt-Bernburg, accompanied by Jupiter , Prudentia , Minerva and Apollo .
