Knau Castle
The former Knau Castle is in Knau , a district of the town of Neustadt an der Orla in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia .
history
The castle has existed since the middle of the 14th century. As confirmed by dendrochronological studies on the wooden structure of the building, a previous building already existed. A service yard of the Saalfeld monastery had existed here. The Knau estate is mentioned in writing for the first time in 1522. The old castle was in the early 17th century by Esaias of Brandenstein in the style of the Renaissance with two ballrooms built. In the course of time the ownership changed several times. The Count of Hoym added the so-called New Manor House to the existing building . Towards the end of the 19th century, the property was expanded into a model estate . In the course of the land reform , the estate was divided. From 1946 to 1951, the Thuringian teaching and testing facility for pig farming was located in the manor house. Then from 1952 there was the animal husbandry section . In 1992 a fire destroyed the manor house and the adjacent stables.
Building description
The building complex of the former manor consists of a rectangular, three-storey building from the 16th century, the polygonal stair tower in the southern area and a two-storey, three-winged mansion, which was added to the south in 1798 to create a four-sided courtyard . The façade of the palace building originally had plastered corner stones , baroque framed windows and a three-axis risalit with a tympanum in the middle of the east façade , into which a seat niche portal, dated 1607, was translocated . Today there is no more architectural jewelry.
The older building has a groin vaulted hall on the ground floor and a hall with a profiled wooden beam ceiling on the first floor . In the hall on the second floor there are remains of the original painting. The interior of the younger manor house has largely been changed after 1945 through conversion .
