The left part of the actual castle dates back to between 1590 and 1620 and was built by Henri de St.-Nectaire on the ruins of a castle that was destroyed in 1562. The right part of the building, added between 1630 and 1640 according to plans by François Mansart, goes back to his son Henri de La Ferté-Senneterre , Marshal of France . He also had the stables (left extensions) and the left pavilion built. Marshal de Lowendal , who had owned the property since the middle of the 18th century, expanded the palace complex with the right extensions, the right pavilion and a neo-Gothic chapel in the park .

In the course of the French Revolution , La Ferté-Saint-Aubin Castle was confiscated and finally sold to Marshal François Victor Masséna in 1827. In 1987 Jacques Guyot bought it and opened it to the public.

Castle complex

The construction, based on stone and brick , of the complex, which is enclosed by a moat , follows the traditional architectural style of the Sologne . The view of the palace and main courtyard only opens up after crossing a bridge and passing the large gate flanked by two pavilions with a domed roof . The left, “small” castle still has the original diamond-shaped bricks, while the right, “large” castle has a baroque facade with a decorated roof oriel . There are 15 rooms furnished with old furniture, which are spread over three floors. The large salon and dining room are furnished with furniture from the 18th century.

In the two similar outbuildings of the complex, which close off the courtyard, the stables are housed on the left and an orangery on the right .

The castle park, which extends over 40 hectares, was laid out as a French garden as early as 1630 and changed into a landscape park from 1822 . Since 1992 it looks like it did in the 18th century, with arcades and a total of seven canals that are fed by the Cosson. The park flora includes bald cypresses and araucarias .

The castle has been under monument protection as a monument historique since 1961 , the park and the moats were added to the list of monuments in 1944 .
