Ulrich von Liechtenstein , known as a minstrel, built the first castle on Murau's Schlossberg around 1232 . The castle was destroyed in the war between the House of Habsburg and the Bohemian King Přemysl Ottokar II. 1276–1278. It was then rebuilt by Ulrich's son Otto von Liechtenstein .

Christoph von Liechtenstein was married to the merchant's daughter Anna Neumann von Wasserleonburg (November 25, 1535 - December 18, 1623; her second marriage), who after her marriage bought the property from her husband's siblings and was the mistress of the old castle for half a century Liechtenstein lived in Murau. When he died in 1580, the rule of Murau passed to the widow. She is one of the most important figures in Murau's city history. At the age of 81, she married the then 31-year-old Imperial Count Georg Ludwig zu Schwarzenberg in 1617 in her sixth marriage - although the marriage was probably entered into as an adoption with a view to future inheritance. (2 of the Neumann's children had died before her and had no children, so she herself had no descendants.) After the death of his wife in 1623, Count Georg Ludwig had the old castle demolished, and between 1628 and 1643 the square renaissance castle around an arcade courtyard build.

The castle Obermurau remained until the present day the property of in 1670 by the Emperor I. Leopold in the Imperial Prince raised house Schwarzenberg .

Today, in addition to private rooms, the castle also houses the Schwarzenberg family's forest management. Around Murau alone, 18,000  hectares of forest are owned by the Schwarzenbergs, a total of 19,000 hectares.
