The Schwarzenberg Castle is from a medieval emerged weir and shapes next to the St. George's Church , the image of the district town Schwarzenberg in Saxony Erzgebirgskreis .

Building history

The castle was probably founded in the 12th century as a fortification and formed the starting point for the settlement of Schwarzenberg and the surrounding area. The former castle was given its present shape through a conversion to the electoral Saxon hunting lodge from 1555 to 1558 for elector August von Sachsen . In 1851/52 the keep and south wing were raised, and an administration building was added in 1875/76.

The three-wing complex surrounds an almost rectangular courtyard. The keep is located in the west of the palace in the east and a connecting building to the south. The original circular wall in the north was replaced by an administration building. The lower part of the keep dates from the 12th century and forms the oldest part of the complex. He was raised mid-19th century by two storeys and received instead of the curly hood of the 16th century, a conical roof . The three-storey tower room extension in the west of the keep has a late Gothic stepped gable . This was probably built at the end of the 15th century and renewed at the end of the 1970s. The intermediate building to the palace was extended in the course of the renovation from 1555 to 1558 and raised by two floors in the middle of the 19th century. At the palace there is a corner tower in the northeast and a spiral stone facing the courtyard from the 16th century. On both upper floors you can see wooden beam ceilings, some of which are carved, and arched portals from the same period. On the first floor there are paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The castle parlor has a flat stucco ceiling and ornamentally painted window reveals. The upper floor is decorated with wall paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Like the ground floor of the south wing, which has arched doors with profiled granite walls, the castle cellar is constructed as a barrel vault . The stepped gable of the neo-Gothic administration building is modeled on that of the tower room building.

Schwarzenberg Castle Museum

The Schwarzenberg City Museum has been located in Schwarzenberg Castle since 1954. In 1957 the first permanent exhibition on "Erzgebirge Iron" was opened. After extensive restoration work under the leadership of the museum director Hans Becher , the museum was reopened in 1977 as the "Museum Erzgebirgisches Eisen und Zinn". The focus of the collection and exhibition is on the history of the castle and town, the mining of the region, the craftsmanship of iron and tin, and textile lace in a variety of genres. In 2006 the castle tower was integrated into the museum with an exhibition on the history of the castle's tower and judiciary. The museum has a reference library with over 10,000 volumes or around 6500 book titles, mostly on the history of the region.
