The Castle Zweibrüggen is a former moated castle in Übach-Palenberg , in Wurmtal between the districts Palenberg and Frelenberg located.

history

Zweibrüggen Castle around 1860, Alexander Duncker collection

House Zweibrüggen was the seat of a noble family of the same name. In 1397 a Leynart von Zweibrücken was mentioned in a document. In 1457 Heinrich von Zweibrüggen was the owner of the moated castle. He was also mentioned in 1486 as the last of his line.

Dietrich von der Hagen, married to the daughter of Heinrich von Zweibrüggen, inherited the property in 1486. He was followed as owner by his son-in-law Nikolaus von Mirbach. After his death in 1552, his sons Johann and Wilhelm von Mirbach shared the property. In 1605, the son of Wilhelm von Mirbach, Nikolaus, became the owner of Zweibrüggen. In 1648 the owner changed again: Hermann von Mirbach was now enfeoffed with Zweibrüggen. He was followed in 1676 by his son-in-law Hans Wilhelm von Voss.

Zweibrüggen remained in the possession of the von Voss family until 1697. In 1697 Wilhelm Adolf von Eys became the owner of Zweibrüggen Castle through his marriage to Anna Florentina von Mirbach, heiress of Zweibrüggen. In 1727 Johann Franz Freiherr von Eys was enfeoffed with Zweibrüggen. After his death in 1786 the property fell to the bailiff of Aldenhoven , Joseph Anton von Negri, who was married to the daughter of Johann Franz von Eys.

The von Negri family remained in the ownership of Zweibrüggen Castle until 1993. In the following years the property was extensively renovated with subsidies and today belongs to the city of Übach-Palenberg.

building

The manor house was rebuilt in 1788 by Joseph Anton von Negri. The electoral hunting lodge Falkenlust near Brühl served as a model . The associated farmyard with its buildings dates from the 16th to 17th centuries and is still owned by the von Negrid family today.

In the representative two-story entrance hall with a gallery walk, cultural events from classical concerts to art exhibitions to high-ranking international political events such as the Eurolog take place on a regular basis.

A valuable wall altar that had previously been hidden was rediscovered after the turn of the millennium and, after the foundation of the Neuman & Esser company had it renovated, can be viewed again in the castle today.

The registry office of the city of Übach-Palenberg is located in the side wing of the castle .

Eurolog

For the first time in April 2013, the so-called Eurolog was held as a European conversation between EU citizens, EU politicians and Eurocrats as a preliminary program for the annual Charlemagne Prize award ceremony in Aachen in Zweibrüggen Castle.
