Schmölwall

The Schmölwall ( Danish : Smol Vold also Smølvold ) is an Outbound Wallburg in Southern Jutland settlement Smol on the edge of Broager on the north side of the Flensburg Fjord in Denmark .

background

The round castle was probably built in prehistoric times . It is located on a 46-meter-high elevation, which is the highest point between Nybøl Nor and Broager and thus offers a very good view of the fjord. Their circular ramparts have a diameter of 50 meters. During excavations, archaeologists found pottery shards from the time between 400 and 500 AD, i.e. from the Nordic Bronze Age . Why Schmöllwall was built is unknown. Originally the Schmöllwall could have been a place of worship . The later use of the facility is also not entirely clear. The ramparts, however, obviously show a certain resemblance to Kajborg , which is located on the nearby island of Alsen . Perhaps the complex also served as a people's castle , as a place of refuge for the surrounding population to protect them from enemy turns . But possibly also one was in Schmöllwall beacon lit at the approach of enemies back. Tales of a tunnel between Schmölwall and the Broacker church are now considered fictitious.

In 1920, parts of a sword from the 13th century were found, which is therefore from the Middle Ages , but not from the Viking Age . In the Middle Ages, according to regional legends, a knight lived in the Wallburg with his family or, alternatively, two sisters who “grew together” (see Siamese twins ). These castle residents are said to have built Broager Church. Another legend claims that the facility, also popularly known as "Schwedenschanze" (Danish: Svenskeskansen ), was excavated as a protective wall against the Swedes by the rural residents of the Broagers parish during the Second Northern War . They are said to have trained their martial skills every day with pitchforks, flails, scythes and similar equipment at the church of Broager. Nevertheless, they are said to have fallen in defense of the Schmölwall against the Swedes. Later the elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg-Prussia, who was allied with Denmark, liberated the area from the Swedes. According to this assumption, the Schmölwall, unlike other Schwedenschanzen , apparently had nothing to do with the Thirty Years War .

In 1864 Prussian soldiers used Schmöllwall as a vantage point on the Düppeler Schanzen . In 1931 a Danish community bought the Wallburg to prevent the German minority from buying the site. The Dannebrog is usually flagged on a flagpole in the middle of the ramparts .
