The narrow-leaved sticky seed ( Pittosporum tenuifolium ) is a plant species from New Zealand from the genus of sticky seeds ( Pittosporum ) in the sticky seed family (Pittosporaceae).

description

The narrow-leaved sticky seed is an evergreen shrub or tree and reaches heights of up to about 10 meters. The bark of the trunk is smooth and dull gray. An egg-shaped, richly branched crown is formed. The bark of the branches is dark purple-brown. The undivided, alternate leaves are shiny, thin, about 5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide and elongated-elliptical in shape. The leaf margin is slightly wavy and wrinkled. The upper side of the leaf is light green with a raised whitish midrib.

The small, dark red to purple flowers are inconspicuous because of their very dark color, they have a strong smell and are 6 to 7 mm in diameter. A gray-black capsule fruit about 1.5 cm in size is formed.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

distribution

The home of the narrow-leaved glutinous seeds is on the North and South Islands of New Zealand . It grows there in the coastal regions and the lower mountain areas up to altitudes of about 900 m.

In Australia the plant has since been naturalized. It is not hardy in Central Europe . In much of the British Isles it thrives outdoors; it is often planted there as a hedge.
