The narrow-leaved pondweed ( Potamogeton × angustifolius Bercht. & J.Presl ; Syn .: Potamogeton × zizii W.DJKoch ex Roth , Potamogeton × babingtonii A.Benn. ) Is a natural hybrid from the plant genus Laichkräuter ( Potamogeton ) within the spawn herb family (Potamogetonaceae). It is a hybrid between Potamogeton lucens and Potamogeton gramineus .

description

The narrow-leaved pondweed is a perennial herbaceous plant . It forms a strong rhizome with a diameter of 3 to 4 millimeters. The water leaves are prickly, thin, translucent, often more or less folded, sessile or short-stalked, the upper stalked longer than the lower. At the base of the stem, the water leaves are reduced to phyllodes . The floating leaves are stalked longer, up to 10 inches long and 3 inches wide and more or less leathery.

The flowering period is from May to October. The stem is thickened.

It is the only hybrid in the genus Laichkraut that blooms profusely and produces fruit.

The fruits are 2.5 to 3 millimeters long, it is not known whether they can also germinate.

The chromosome number of the species is 2n = 52.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the narrow-leaved pondweed reaches from Europe to the western Himalayas. It occurs in societies of the order Potamogetonetalia.

ecology

The narrow-leaved pondweed is an aquatic plant that grows in stagnant or slow-flowing, alkaline and often lime-rich, weakly meso to eutrophic waters over sandy-gravelly to muddy ground in 1 to 2, rarely up to 5 meters water depth; it also endures brief dehydration and then forms a landform.

Taxonomy

The first description of the narrow-leaved pondweed as Potamogetin × angustifolius was made by Jan Svatopluk Presl in F.Berchtold & JSPresl, Prir. Rostlin 1 (Zabnj.): 19 (1821). Later it was described again as new by Albrecht Wilhelm Roth as Potamogeton × zizii W.DJKoch ex Roth in Enum. Pl. Phaen. Germ. 1 (1): 531 (1827), to which WDJ Koch assigned the authorship . With the name he honored the German botanist and teacher in Mainz Johann Baptist Ziz (Mainz October 8, 1779 to December 1, 1829 Mainz).
