Butterfly wood on the B6, view towards Großharthau

The butterwood is a piece of forest east of Dresden between Fischbach and Großharthau in Saxony .

location and size

The butterfly wood is on both sides of the federal highway 6 between the "Fischbacher Kreuz" and the Großharthau district of Schmiedefeld . The largest part of the forest is in the district of Stolpen , smaller parts in the districts of Großharthau and Arnsdorf ; Thus, the butterfly wood belongs to both the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains and the Bautzen district . The Seifenbach flows on the northern edge of the forest and flows into the Schwarze Röder between Seeligstadt and Arnsdorf .

Up until the 19th century, the butterwood extended over an area that reached from Fischbach to the “ Dürrer Fuchs ” inn in Schmiedefeld. Together with other forest areas, namely the Pfarrbusch near Frankenthal and the Herrnholz near Seeligstadt, the butterwood formed a contiguous forest area between the Karswald and the Massenei . From the end of the 19th century, people began to clear large areas of forest and cultivate them for agriculture. The pure forest area of the butterwood is now less than one square kilometer.

Origin of name

The name "Butterholz" comes from the time before the Görlitz – Dresden railway line opened in 1846. At that time, there was a post office in Schmiedefeld , and the road through the wooded area was part of the much-used long-distance route from Hamburg to Breslau . According to tradition, it was above all the stagecoach drivers who always "blared" their songs when crossing the forest, which ultimately gave the area its name.

Haunted and legend of the "gray man"

It is said that a master butcher from Schmiedefeld was killed in a robbery in 1793. A memorial stone with the inscription GSF and the year 1793 reminded of this for a long time . Since then it is said to have haunted Butterfly Wood. Many hikers reported that they heard loud barking dogs, the sounds of galloping horses and calls from riders while crossing the forest at night, but nothing could be seen. In winter, people on the road through the forest are said to have been frightened by the noise of horse-drawn sleighs approaching quickly. Forestry and forest workers as well as carters are also said to have repeatedly encountered a gray man who crossed the country road from the southern to the northern part of the butterwood. The male was allegedly observed very often, but it only crossed the street and did not harm anyone who saw it.

Kennel "Vom Butterholz"

Since 1993 there has been a kennel for German Shepherds in Fischbach , which bears the kennel name Vom Butterholz .
