The snow dock or snow sorrel ( Rumex nivalis ) is a species of the species Ampfer ( Rumex ) within the knotweed family (Polygonaceae).

The snow dock grows as a wintering green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 25 centimeters. Several unbranched stems are formed that are leafless or have one or two stem leaves. The basal leaves are up to 3 cm long, oval, spear-shaped and thick.

The flowering period extends from July to August. The inflorescence is unbranched. The blades are entire and have at least a small callus at the bottom. The outer bracts are turned back.

The chromosome number of the species is 2n = 14 in female plants and 2n = 15 in males.

Occurrence

The snow dock occurs rarely in the eastern Alps, but mostly in smaller populations with a large number of individuals; in the German Alpine region it is only found in the Allgäu Alps ; in Austria, in the northern Limestone Alps east of the Dachstein and in the Austrian Central Alps, it occurs very rarely, also from the Silvretta eastwards, in the western Alps to the Bernese Oberland and Upper Valais .

The snow dock inhabits small snow valleys and moraines , especially at altitudes between 1500 and 2500 meters in the Alps . In the Allgäu Alps, it rises in the Tyrolean part between Mittlerer Stuiben-Alp and Ponten from 1680 meters to 2380 meters on the Rauheck in Bavaria. It needs lime and nutrient-rich, snow-moist, humus-rich, fine-debris-rich clay soils that are long covered by snow in an alpine climate. It is a character species of the Arabido-Rumicetum nivalis from the association Arabidion caeruleae.
