The Schnitzer oak is a natural monument in force striking oak in the Natural Park Keller Edersee where several old oak trees to earn foresters are named.

Geographical location

The large tree stands at a height of 340 m at a five-armed crossroads a few meters within the western edge of the forest in the district of Braunau , a southern district of Bad Wildungen in the northern Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg . There is a shelter for hikers in the immediate vicinity . The village of Braunau is about 1.5 km to the west, the Braunauer Warte, built around 1350 as part of the Wildunger Landwehr, is 800 m to the northwest.

history

Jakob Schnitzer was employed as a princely Waldeck forest runner in the Braunau area in the second quarter of the 19th century . The inhabitants of the village were to a considerable extent dependent on the forest. However, they weren't allowed to do too much: they were allowed to fetch grass for feeding and leaves for litter , they were allowed to collect reading wood for the winter, and they were allowed to drive pigs into the oak and beech forests that they were allowed to use as hat forests . Everything else, especially poaching ( hunting , snare and trapping , wild fishing) and forest crime (e.g. felling trees, cutting off branches or stealing young trees, forest fruits and resins ) was strictly forbidden and was severely punished. One of Schnitzer's tasks was to monitor and enforce compliance with forest laws and regulations. Since he pursued his duties with due diligence and seriousness, he was very unpopular with the Braunau population. On July 25, 1835, he was lured into a trap and killed by poachers.
