The BRG 18 in Wien Waehring is in the sub-step (1st-4. Class) as a secondary school out with geometric drawing, textile and / or Technical plants and in the upper stage with a scientific focus with laboratory instruction.

history

The Unterrealschule (lower level) was founded in 1879, and in 1885 the school moved to the new building at its current location in Schopenhauerstraße. A year later, it was expanded to include the Oberrealschule (upper level). In 1914 the Realgymnasium was set up. During the Second World War, the school building was badly damaged by bombs. In 1996/97 a general renovation and the extension of the multi-purpose hall took place. A year later, the top floor was also expanded. Since then, improvements have been made to the infrastructure, for example an internet café and another IT room were added. The school classes were also equipped with smartboards and projectors.

State lower secondary school

With the immigration of Währing citizens in the second half of the 19th century, the occupational structure changed completely. There were fewer and fewer farmers, but more and more private employees and civil servants commuting to nearby Vienna. These new citizens wanted their children to have a higher education, so that in the autumn of 1879 a state secondary school with two first classes and 79 students (!) Was opened in a house belonging to the Währingen community at Marktgasse 22 (in today's Teschnergasse). The type of school corresponded roughly to today's lower level.

In 1880 the company moved to the newly built school building at Schulgasse 57.

In the next few years, efforts were made to continue to the upper level. In 1884 the Ministry of Education approved the provisional establishment of a fifth grade. This provisional arrangement was extended by one year each year until finally, on September 14, 1886, the final completion to the KK Staatsoberrealschule was approved.

School building: Schopenhauerstraße 49

On November 20, 1884, the Währing community committee decided to build a new school building at today's Schopenhauerstraße 49. Two memorial plaques inside the school commemorate the construction. The construction time was less than a year. In November 1885, the secondary school moved to the new building. The interior of the school was poor for the time: there was no electric light, only one bassena on each floor and the floor consisted of simple wooden boards.

Lack of space

The good training opportunities and the great equipment in the field of natural sciences already led to cramped conditions at the turn of the century. However, the school building, which was once erected in an open area, was now wedged between houses so that an extension was not possible.

Realgymnasium

On June 20, 1914, the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Culture and Education gave its approval for the establishment of a private secondary school in the 18th century. District of Vienna (decree Z 27 498). The "Association for the Promotion of the School System in the XVIII. Wiener Gemeindebezirk "appointed Josef Fritsch to head the institution and the municipality of Vienna provided the necessary rooms in the elementary school Cottagegasse 17.

In September 1914 the first class was opened with 54 students (45 from Währing ). The school fee was 50 kroner, as well as 11 kroner teaching material contribution per year.

The school type of the Realgymnasium combined, through the school reform of 1908, the advantages of the existing Realschulen (without Latin) and the grammar schools (without Descriptive Geometry), which made it possible for graduates to gain university access to humanistic and technical subjects.

First republic

In 1929 the school celebrated its 50th birthday, during which a plaque was unveiled with the names of the teachers and students who died in the First World War.

Due to the increasing number of classes in the Realgymnasium, which was under construction, the lack of space soon became noticeable and the school maintainer started looking for a new building. Since there was no money for a new building, the municipality of Vienna finally left the former boys' primary school at Schopenhauerstraße 66 (corner of Leitermayergasse 45) to the Verein Realgymnasium in 1923. There were ten classrooms, a director's office and two attic attics for storing teaching materials.

In 1933/34, classrooms were also available in the adjoining elementary school building at Leitermayergasse 45. This school building no longer exists today. After the secondary school was closed in 1936, the club high school finally moved to the building at Schopenhauerstraße 49. The club high school, which had little money to buy teaching materials, inherited the school’s collections of teaching materials for biology, physics, history and geography.

High school for boys

After Austria was incorporated into the German Empire, the private club high school was nationalized and given a new school type designation. The war not only left its mark on the building, the school slowly began to be closed: first younger teachers and older Octavians were called up, then younger students were also called up. The drafted teachers were replaced by retirees. A bomb hit on Leitermayergasse made the physics and chemistry room unusable.

After the war

In 1945 the school was taken over by the Republic of Austria and continued as a federal school.

Before lessons could be resumed, numerous war damages had to be repaired makeshiftly. The increasing number of pupils in the 1950s initially required the use of the special classrooms as classrooms, until finally space could be found in the former elementary school Leitermayergasse 47 as a branch .

In 1959, the courier reported in a supplement about the poor structural condition of the school "... the plaster is chipped, the floor has wide joints ... eleven of the 21 classes at this school have to be taught outside ...".

The general renovation of the building lasted until 1964, during which numerous rooms were relocated, floors renewed, all classes were provided with water connections, and the special rooms were equipped with new installations and new furniture. The plan to develop the courtyard into an athletics facility with a cinder track for shot put and a diving pit with a sand bed could not be implemented, as was the parents' association's idea of roofing the courtyard.

School flag

The illustration of the former school flag shows the patron saints of the suburbs incorporated in 1892, from which the 18th district of Währing was formed:

Girl and computer

Over the next few years, renovations and renovations followed, the space was tight and attempts were made to create new rooms for new challenges and to do the necessary maintenance.

In the 1979/80 school year, RG 18 also opened its doors to girls.

In 1984/85 the non-binding exercise EDV was offered for the first time . The equipment required for this was housed in a classroom on the first floor (today's management area).

In the summer of 1985 the school mutated again into a major construction site: old doors and door frames were replaced, the electrical installation was improved, floors were renovated and numerous rooms were painted.

From the 1985/86 school year, the compulsory subject of computer science was taught.

General renovation

In the 1996/97 school year, the main building at Schopenhauerstraße 49 was extensively renovated. The whole school was relocated, the entire inventory was packed and the lessons took place in two branches:

  • Expositur Leitermayergasse 47: Management and upper school classes
  • Expositur Wilhelm-Exner-Gasse 5A: Administration and lower-level classes

The start of the lesson was shifted by 15 minutes so that the teachers could switch from Exner Gasse to Leitermayergasse during the “break” (without losing lessons).

In addition to the newly built central school library with internet access, a new gymnasium was built in the Abt-Karl-Gasse in a BUWOG residential building. This could already be used for sporting activities at the end of the school year. Instead of the old gym in the Schopenhauerstraße building, a multi-purpose room was built.

First website

After the first presentation of the (offline) school homepage for the open day on November 23, 1996 in the Wilhelm-Exner-Gasse branch and further research, the purely HTML-based website went online in the 1997 summer semester.

Loft extension

At the official handover of the functionally refurbished schoolhouse by Elisabeth Gehrer on September 15, 1997, the minister announced that the attic expansion had already been ordered from BIG and that nothing stood in the way of further building work. This expansion of the classroom has been sought by all representatives of the school for years in order to finally accommodate all students in one building. The first visits to the top floor by architects and planners took place in October.

In June, the first construction containers were set up and the dismantling of the floor including the fill began. The removal of a chimney brought a massive amount of dust into the IT room 2. Apparently electrical cables and distribution boxes had been placed in chimneys that were no longer in use.

The dismantling work in the attic caused a water pipe break in the chemistry room at the beginning of the summer holidays, so that the conference room was flooded. The existing false ceiling was reinforced with a concrete layer. The existing ceiling in the area of the corridor to the physics room broke and the concrete landed on the 2nd floor.

The delivery of the steel structure for the new roof extension was delayed. As a result, the old roof was only removed at the end of August. Heavy rain on the last weekend of the holiday and in the first week of school not only flooded the 2nd floor, but also some rooms on the 1st floor and parts of the library on the ground floor.

But now the construction work was progressing rapidly, the steel structure was finally delivered, and immediately afterwards the ceiling was mounted and filled with concrete. The interior work was in full swing in mid-November: partition walls were erected, electrical cables and data lines for computer connections were laid, radiators were installed and connected.

At the beginning of the second semester, all students could be accommodated under one roof. The furniture was not ordered in time and the students now had to make do with the furniture from the branch that had already been worn out. Many of the old armchairs no longer had "rubber feet" and so damaged the new wooden floor.

Redesign of the basement

Since the loft extension still did not offer enough space for the required classes and special rooms, it was decided to redesign the part of the basement with the showers and changing rooms that was untouched during the functional renovation. This work took place parallel to the attic extension. The school became a major construction site when it was in full operation. Various breakdowns also ensured “flexible” working conditions.

A load-bearing wall between the showers and the cloakroom was removed to make room for a new classroom for textile works.

The BE-Saal moved to the bright attic and the musicians now moved into the vacated room in the west wing. In order to accommodate all teaching materials, part of the hall was separated and space was created for the collection.

The windowless BE collection was provided with additional ventilation in order to be used as a changing room for sports activities in the multi-purpose hall.

The relocation of the old files and catalogs to the former educational counseling (next to the management) made it possible for the school doctor in the management wing to get a new ordination and no longer to sit in the last corner of the cellar.

First web server

In spring 1999, a separate web server was set up for the school homepage. The school's website was available at the somewhat bulky URL www.rg18.asn-wien.ac.at. Individual visual impressions are stored in the web archive.

renovation

After the attic expansion and the redesign of the basement, the school building shone in new splendor. The completion of the construction work and the opening of the central school library could be celebrated on September 24, 1999. However, new construction defects kept appearing, which took years to rectify.

First arthurt day

On June 2, 2000 Richard Henner's idea to present the class projects that arose every year in the course of a school year to the other students and above all to the parents and the public became a success. A jury awarded the best projects with an "Arthur".

Courtyard design

Courtyard design 2000

Since the general renovation of the school building with the lowering of the courtyard, a raw concrete wall has adorned the small schoolyard. This gray wall was made more colorful in autumn 2000 based on designs by students under the artistic guidance of Ludmilla Kriz.

New url

In 2001 the bulky URL was replaced by a shortened form. The school homepage is now available at www.rg18.ac.at and the URL is much easier to remember.

Physics laboratory class

For some years now, 4th grade students have been offered more intensive science lessons. Laboratory exercises in biology and chemistry have almost become a tradition. In the school year 2002/03 it was possible for the first time in the 4th A to offer laboratory exercises in physics. One hour per week was held as a “regular” physics lesson and the two other hours (fortnightly) were available for student exercises.

The technical team

Students always helped with the organization and technical handling of the festivities during their non-teaching time. This commitment was used in the 2003/04 school year as an opportunity to offer the students more background knowledge and training opportunities on sound, light and stage technology as part of the non-binding exercise in multimedia in practice . In this cross-year exercise, " learnig by doing " is part of the program, the young students learn and train with the more experienced.

Welcome party

The welcoming party for the first-grade students is a tradition at the RG18, but this custom has been a little forgotten due to the many renovations and other cost-saving measures. After a break of several years, the new first-class students were able to get back into the mood for eventful school years in autumn 2003.

New high school

After three and a half years of work, the “new upper level” was able to start in autumn 2004 with a GIM branch (geometry-computer science-mathematics) and a scientific focus with laboratory lessons.

5 days a week

Massive reductions in hours to relieve the students made it more and more difficult to create a sensible timetable for everyone involved, so that, after a long discussion, the school community declared Saturday as a non-teaching time from autumn 2004.

Night of physics

RG18 students bring the well-traveled light to the festival stage

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Albert Einstein's death , a beam of light was sent around the world on April 18, 2005 from Princeton (Einstein's last place of work). After about 20,000 km, it reaches Austria near Hainburg at 10:30 p.m. , was received via Fischamend near Kahlenberg , directed to the Academy of Sciences and then taken by students from RG18 to Stephansplatz.

Video broadcast of a heart operation

This performance of the RG18 technology team with the bidirectional live connection between the break hall on the top floor and the multi-purpose hall on the ground floor at various school events impressed the grandfather of a schoolgirl ( Hans-Heinz Khünl-Brady ) so much that he made contact with the Hietzing Hospital . A heart operation was to be broadcast live in a seminar room as part of the Long Night of Research . After many discussions and long preparations, the technical team, headed by Georg Eipeldauer, accepted this challenge in autumn 2005: Schoolchildren filmed in the operating room, edited the signals from several cameras in preparation for the operation and transmitted the procedure, which lasted several hours, to a seminar room several floors away . The visitors were enthusiastic because they could also ask the surgeon questions about the operation, which he immediately answered professionally.

The seminar room could hardly do justice to the onslaught, the interest was huge and everyone was enthusiastic about the achievements of the RG18 technical team. In the next few years (2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014) live operations were carried out again as part of the Long Night of Research . In order to cope with the onslaught, a much larger lecture hall, about 200 m away, was transferred to another wing of the building. The technical team also mastered this challenge with much longer cable runs, but this room was too small, so another projection was set up in the stairwell.

First NMB disco

The young technicians from the 4th grade of the non-binding exercise “Multimedia in Practice” organized a disco afternoon for the children in the afternoon care in February 2006. The technology team gained new experiences in this way and for the NMB kids this was a welcome change in their leisure time. From this event, the traditional carnival festival on Mardi Gras Tuesday of the NMB and the first classes developed.

SchopspoT

The project launched in 2006 for the compulsory elective course in computer science should run for three years. The students of the WPF learned to create Flash animations and presented their school spots in the break hall on the top floor. In addition to information about the school, short, but sometimes very complex animations were presented. This info screen project received an award during Arthurtag 2008.

Library extension

In the summer of 2007 the school library was rebuilt and enlarged. An adjoining break room was connected to the library and separated from the corridor by a glass front; Bookshelves “moved” from their old locations to this new room, creating space for new tables and armchairs. This created a new work area for small groups, which is also often used as a quiet workplace. Computer workstations and projectors expand the multimedia offerings in the modern school library.

Never forget

Memorial plaque in the school yard

Charles Kurt (Karl-Heinz Goldschmidt) attended second grade in 1938 when 88 Jewish students were expelled from school. In April 2008 he went back to his old school and told the assembled students about his experiences and his escape from Vienna. He showed pictures from his childhood that accompanied him sewn into his coat.

After his lecture, some students accompany him to the memorial event in Servitengasse.

New website

The old static school homepage based on HTML was replaced in 2008 by a modern content management system (CMS). In addition to the new structure, the new Wordpress system offered several teachers the opportunity to expand the homepage. Individual screenshots are stored in the web archive.

A third IT room

In the summer vacation of 2008, another room was created next to the custodian for technical works in the basement by means of a glass wall. This new IT room is equipped with 15 PCs, printers and projectors and thus offers additional options for using information technology and new media more intensively in the classroom. The increased interest in the GIM branch (focus on geometry, computer science and more mathematics lessons) in the upper level is taken into account by expanding the infrastructure.

Computer week

For the first time after the introduction of the new upper-level branches, there was a computer week on Salzstiegl in autumn 2008 for the 7th grade with an ICT focus. On the Alm, in a well-equipped area with internet access and IT rooms, there was a free head for network technology and programming as well as lots of sport and fun to balance.

Courtyard painting 2

RG18 courtyard design 2009

In autumn 2009, the concrete rondeau around the yew tree in the school yard was enriched by the 8th grade students with “ messages ” under the direction of Wolfgang Oppitz. In a night shift, the designs were projected using an overhead projector and the contours drawn on the wall. The execution then took place in daylight.

The Christmas guest

The school choir under the direction of Postl started a series of performances in December 2010 with the mini-musical “The Christmas Guest” . The students of the non-binding exercise choir were always supported by high school students and the technical team.

  • The dreams of Morpheus - musical of good dreams (2011/12)
  • School of Dreams (2012/13)
  • Lion heart and the magic amulet (2013/14)
  • Musical hits (2015/16)

eLSA certification 2013

Since the school year 2009/10, the Realgymnasium has been involved in the eLSA project - eLearning in everyday school life. The aim of this project is that pupils of the lower secondary level (“lower level”) get to know new methods of computer-aided and networked learning. The special thing about this project is that the new technologies are not viewed in isolation, but are used as aids in all subjects.

IT projects that are already an integral part of the lessons have been included in the school profile and enriched with further ideas. As a result, all teachers in all classes are now increasingly using eLearning and have come to appreciate the benefits.

On March 6, 2013, a commission, consisting of the eLSA federal coordinator Erika Hummer, a representative of the city school council Rudolf Zoufal and the technical inspector for IT in Lower Austria Alfred Nussbaumer, visited the RG18 and was able to convince themselves of the IT competence of the students. After the review, the school was given the eLSA certificate with the obligation to further develop the eLearning process.

In the following years, an eLSA curriculum was developed that includes the most important digital skills. These competencies are imparted in project-oriented lesson sequences in all classes of the lower grades.

Student League Soccer Final 2015

The BRG 18 team was able to advance to the finals of the soccer school league in the 2015/16 school year. Although the opponent at Hellas Kagran Platz was physically superior to the Dominicans' pGRg 13 of the young RG18 players, it was not an easy game for them.

100 years of RG18

A very special birthday cake

The school community took this as an opportunity to hold a big festival in October 2014. The whole school became a stage and an exhibition area, reports on the past days and current teaching projects were presented. Many graduates and former teachers visited “their” school on this festival day and brought their best wishes.

Last Supper 2.0

The students of the 8th grade (KV Barbara Wegscheider) designed a large mural on the 2nd floor (near the chemistry room) in the winter semester 2016, as part of the art education class led by Nicole Krenn. Based on “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci, Last Supper 2.0 was created with students and teachers of the class as well as contemporary dishes at the table.

Handball

The BRG 18 has also been represented in handball since 2016. Several successes have already been achieved, including state schoolmasters in different age groups. The school now has almost nine lower school teams and one upper school team. The cooperation with the local handball club Post SV is closely linked to the success of handball at BRG 18. From the beginning, the club was the training center for handball players for the school and thus also participated in the success.
