At the end of the 16th century the church was built in the form of a hall. The west tower with onion dome dates from 1709. The interior of the church had a wooden barrel as a vault and a baroque interior with a pulpit altar. In 1903 the church was completely restored.

During air raids on the place on July 20, 1944 and April 5, 1945, the church was badly damaged and the rectory was destroyed. Since 1948 restoration work has been carried out on the church. The baroque furnishings come from the Naundorf church, which was demolished as a result of lignite mining.

On July 1, 1950, Schortau was incorporated into Braunsbedra.

In the cemetery there are graves of German and two Italian flak soldiers who were on duty in the Schortau flak position. 26 of them died in a British night bomb attack on May 4th / 5th. April 1945. A memorial stone placed by the Republic of Italy next to the graves bears the inscription: "Italian soldiers rest here".
