Course of the Schrenk in the catchment area of ​​the Taimyra

The Schrenk ( Russian Шренк ) is a 372 km long left tributary of the Lower Taimyra on the Taimyr Peninsula in northern Russia .

The Schrenk has its origin in a lake in the mountains that occupies the north-western part of the Taimyr peninsula. It flows in an easterly direction through the tundra landscape , where it cuts the approximately 300  m high geological ridge (Grjada Geologitscheskaja) in the middle course and then crosses the lowlands north of the topographic ridge (Grjada Topografitscheskaja). Both mountain ridges run north parallel to the Byrranga Mountains , the most important mountains on the peninsula. The river finally flows into the Lower Taimyra more than 750 km north-northeast of Norilsk , about halfway between Lake Taimyr and the mouth of the Taimyra in the Kara Sea .

The catchment area of the river covers 11800 km². The most important tributaries are the Mamonta ("Mammut River", 168 km) from the left and the Moskvichka (74 km), Possadochnaja (84 km), Grjadowaja (94 km) and Grawijnaja (93 km) from the right.

The Schrenk flows through a practically unpopulated area without any infrastructure that belongs to the Krasnoyarsk region. The river was named after the naturalist Alexander von Schrenk (1816-1876) by the explorer Alexander Theodor von Middendorff (1815-1894), who in August 1843 drove the Lower Taimyra down to the Karasee and back to the Taimyrsee .
