Schußfahrt vom Mount Everest (Original title: The Man Who Skied Down Everest ) is a Canadian-Japanese documentary by Bruce Nyznik and Lawrence Schiller about the mountaineer Yūichirō Miura , who went down Mount Everest on skis in 1970 . The film was produced by Canadian filmmaker Budge Crawley and won an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1976 . The film premiered on September 19, 1975 in Canada. The first broadcast on German television was on October 24, 1987 on ZDF .

background

It took Miura 2 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the 2,000 meters and fell 1,320 feet (about 402 m) from the steep face of the Lhotse along the yellow route just below the South Col. He used a large parachute to slow his fall and came to a halt 250 feet (76 m) from a crevasse.

Ski jumping was the goal of the Japanese Everest Skiing Expedition in 1970 . Six members of the expedition died. At the same time, another Japanese expedition called The Japanese Mount Everest Expedition 1970 attempted the climb. This took the way partly on the normal route and then made the first attempt to ascend over the southwest flank. Two members of the second expedition also died.

The budget for the film was approximately $ 410,000 Canadian.

There is also a documentary about Miura about his departure from Mount Fuji .

reception

The film-dienst wrote that the "illustrated with unique landscapes" film dealt with the "human addiction for top performance and self-affirmation in the face of the challenges of nature". Hal Erickson wrote that the film shines with “breathtaking visuals”, but that the “silly voice [of the narrator] in the English original” is only “not very Oscar-worthy”.
