The Ten-Year Lunch (Subtitle: The Wit and Legend of the Algonquin Round Table ) is a 1987 American documentary directed by Aviva Slesin about the Algonquin Round Table . The film was released on September 28, 1987. At the 1988 Academy Awards , the film received an Oscar for Best Documentary .

The film reports on the Algonquin Round Table , a loose group of journalists , writers and actors who met regularly for lunch at the Algonquin Hotel in New York in the Roaring Twenties .

The film explores the conflicts and romances of the circle and shows how the group broke up in the late 1920s due to different literary ambitions and different social views, also as a result of the Sacco and Vanzetti case . Well-known members were Dorothy Parker , Robert Benchley , George S. Kaufman , Edna Ferber , Marc Connelly , Harold Ross and Harpo Marx .

In a retrospective of Slesin at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival , The Ten-Year Lunch was named one of the best documentary films in 1988. The film is "joyful and lively" and "celebrates" the group's meetings. The members are portrayed as “young hopeful”, “bluntly” and “scandalous”.

Awards

In addition to receiving an Oscar , the film received a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Individual Achievement - Information Broadcast as part of the American Masters series . Aviva Slesin also received the Lillian Gish Award at the Los Angeles Women in Film Festival .
