Douglas Rain

Douglas Rain (born March 13, 1928 in Winnipeg , Manitoba , † November 11, 2018 in St. Marys , Ontario ) was a Canadian theater and film actor .

life and career

Douglas Rain studied acting at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Banff , Alberta , and the Old Vic School in London , England . In the course of his acting career he was primarily active in the theater, only later and then only occasionally he was seen in film and television. Rain achieved fame as the voice of the computer HAL 9000 in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and its sequel 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984). Director Stanley Kubrick selected Rain because of his soft voice with a transatlantic accent.

He co-founded the Stratford Festival , for which he worked for over 45 years. His most famous stage role was the title role in Shakespeare's Henry V in a performance in Stratford , Ontario , which was subsequently taken over as a television production. For his performance in the Broadway -Stück Vivat! Vivat Regina! Rain was nominated for a Tony Award in 1972 .

His first marriage to Lois Shaw had two sons. In his second marriage he was married to the film and theater actress Martha Henry , with whom he has a daughter. He died in November 2018 at the age of 90.
