The Magdeburg helmet manufacturer Schuberth Holding GmbH is a German head protection technology company. It produces various head protection systems for the motorcycle, motor sport, occupational safety, fire brigade, police and military sectors. The company is particularly well-known as a manufacturer of motorcycle and motorsport helmets .

The company has been involved in Formula 1 since 1999 , equips various teams with helmets and maintains a sponsorship partnership with AMG Petronas . Schuberth currently produces a million helmets per year.

In 1922, the Schuberth company was founded in Braunschweig as a cabinet maker in the vicinity of a brewery, in order to enable the workers who had retired there to continue to work.

During the war years, Schuberth-Werk KG manufactured inner linings for steel helmets of the type M31-M35. They held a patent with the DRP (German Reich Patent Office) for an aluminum inner lining, which should make wearing the steel helmets more comfortable for the soldiers. Inner linings were manufactured with the size specified as a fraction and marked with nA ("new type") and aA ("old type").

In the early 1950s, Schuberth began developing and producing head protection systems. The first safety helmet was presented as early as 1952, as was new interior fittings for the steel helmets of the Federal Border Police and the state police. In 1954 the first motorcycle helmet with the name "Aero" came on the market. Schuberth has also been producing protective helmets for the military since 1956, initially for the occupying powers of West Germany, then also for the German Bundeswehr. Under the leadership of the entrepreneur Christian Zahn, the company grew into the largest helmet manufacturer in Europe. In 1976 Schuberth GmbH presented the first full-face motorcycle helmet. Since 1985 the company has been using its own wind tunnel and climate test bench in the development of its products. Under Alexander Zahn, son of Christian Zahn, the family company developed into a renowned premium provider. Under his direction, helmet production was relocated from Braunschweig (Lower Saxony) to Magdeburg (Saxony-Anhalt) in 2003. In 2006 the family property became the property of a US private equity fund. In 2008 research and development, marketing and sales were also relocated from Braunschweig to Magdeburg. The relocation of the company to Magdeburg was finally completed in 2015 with the move of the Schuberth Air & Acoustic Lab, its own aerodynamics and aeroacoustic wind tunnel with a climate test bench.

In September 2013, the Munich-based Perusa Fund acquired the majority of the shares in Schuberth GmbH and its subsidiaries (Schuberth Group). Jan-Christian Becker has been managing the company as CEO since 2013. In 2014 Schuberth bought the Italian specialist company for helmet interior fittings Teca25 and integrated it into the Schuberth Holding, the following year the Italian sales company Schuberth Italia SrL was founded. In 2014 Schuberth introduced a self-developed helmet technology, "Direct Fiber Processing", which is based on the manufacturing methods of the aircraft industry. In the same year Schuberth entered into a cooperation with Avon Protection and Ceotronics for the development and sale of a new police protection system (helmet-mask combination HMK 150) in order to meet new technical guidelines of the police. Since 2015, another cooperation with the 3M Group has been serving the joint development and distribution of police and military helmets. Schuberth currently exports to 55 countries worldwide, has its own sales company in North America and employs around 400 people.

Products

The helmets are tested for their aerodynamics in the company's own wind and acoustic tunnel.

In 2018, Schuberth won the “Best Brand” readers' choice of Europe's largest motorcycle magazine, Motorrad, in the helmet category for the 13th time in a row . The flip-up helmet C3 Pro was awarded the iF product design award 2014 . The successor, the C4, was named the best flip-up helmet of 2017 by Motorrad magazine . The current model from Schuberth is the C4 Pro.

Schuberth also produces protective helmets for the construction, steel, chemical, energy and forestry industries.

Schuberth has been equipping the German armed forces since it was founded and has played a key role in the further development of the combat helmet . In 1956, a plastic helmet made by the company was used for parades and guard stands (protocol helmet), which weighed only 235 grams. The Swiss military also wears Schuberth helmets. In addition to the German police and fire brigade, many European emergency services are also equipped with helmets from the company. The Grenzschutzgruppe 9 (GSG 9) equipped their helmets with helmet linings of the modern variant from the Schuberth company.

Engagement in motorsport

In 1999 Schuberth started its involvement as a sponsor in Formula 1. Nick Heidfeld was the first racing driver to advertise Schuberth in the 2000 season. A long-term relationship developed with the record world champion Michael Schumacher , which continued even after he left Formula 1. In the 2015 season, Nico Rosberg (Mercedes AMG Petronas racing team), Felipe Massa (Williams Martini Racing team), Nico Hülkenberg (Sahara Force India racing team) and Sergio Pérez (Sahara Force India racing team) wore the Schuberth SF1 helmet, the made of plastic, which is reinforced with 19 layers of carbon fibers . The partnership with Nico Rosberg and Felipe Massa has existed since 2005.

The safety of the Formula 1 helmet was positively mentioned after a serious accident by Felipe Massa at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Schuberth not only equips Formula 1 drivers, but also drivers of the Indycar, NASCAR, DTM and young drivers of the ADAC Formula 4 and the FIA ​​Formula 3 European Championship. The drivers include Danica Patrick , Mick Schumacher and David Beckmann .

In 2016, the helmet manufacturer became the supplier of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, a racing series for young motorcyclists. Moto2 drivers Marcel Schrötter and Jesko Raffin also wear helmets from Schuberth in the World Cup season.

Trivia

The Speed motorcycle helmet became famous in the late 1980s when it was mentioned in the Werner comic series . The helmet, designed like a golf ball for aerodynamic reasons, was seen there as a distinguishing feature of the unloved, scooter-riding popper . Although the design was divided, the helmet introduced in 1983 was the first motorcycle helmet to use the knowledge of aerodynamics in its development. Today the helmet enjoys cult status.

In 2001 there were problems with the type H2 fire helmet from Schuberth. This resulted in an article in the television magazine Frontal21 on January 22nd, 2002, and led to an order to avert special accident and health hazards according to Section 17 (1) No. 2 SGB VII (statutory accident insurance).
