The training of the dog should begin at a young age. There the dog is trained in such a way that it later sees the protective sleeve as prey and can be trained on its prey behavior. It is difficult to make the dog obedient in this situation. In order to learn the necessary commands, but also barking and other skills, it is necessary not to calm the dog down, as is customary in training basic obedience.

In sport, the main thing is to train the dog to become an obedient companion even in extreme situations. Today the animals are trained more and more mainly through motivation and play without significant pressure. The dog in sport does not learn to bite a person, he rather prey on the protective sleeve or the baiting pillow .

Service dogs

A service dog that is used as a protection dog undergoes a similar training, which is, however, much more complicated and usually has to take place faster than a dog used in sport. The training of the police dog is not about playing with the helper about the booty sleeve as in sport, but actually about being able to catch a perpetrator in an emergency: In the police dog area, the dog is trained to target people, also in an emergency to attack ( civil severity ), and to let go again without hesitation at the order of the dog handler. In Germany as well as in Austria and Switzerland there are legal regulations that regulate the use of dogs against people and the training to do so. It is often either generally reserved for the authorities or requires a permit, for example in the security industry.

Dog sport

history

In 1906 the first protection dog competition took place in Germany. The winner was a German Shepherd . The exams, which ran largely the same for over 100 years and included, among other things, attacks by the dog on a figurehead (including protection workers), were modified under pressure from public opinion. The core of the tests are now the dog's self-defense and the handler's defense .

exams

In dog sports there is an international working dog test in the national organizations of the FCI and its member clubs , in which working dogs are tested in different areas ( departments ). In addition to tracking and obedience, this includes protection. In the VDH, similar tests were initially called Schutzhundprüfung (SchH), later the term was replaced by versatility test for working dogs (VPG), since January 1st, 2012 the tests in the VDH have been called international working dog tests IPO. In the ÖKV , the corresponding test is called the Sport Working Dog Test (ÖPO).

In addition to the working dog tests, in which the dogs are tested in different areas, there is also a protection service test in the FCI , in which only protection service is tested (i.e. neither tracking nor subordination). However, the corresponding marks SPr 1 to SPr 3 do not represent training marks in the sense of the show or exhibition regulations, breeding regulations and licensing regulations and pure competitions in the protection service are not permitted according to the FCI regulations.

Competitions

With a trained protection dog, you can take part in a variety of competitions. In addition to the club tests, which are mainly about reaching the next higher test level, many dog sports clubs also organize cup fights. There are different competitions here. There are team competitions in which two dog handlers usually compete together as a team or individual competition. In cup fights the dogs are only shown in section B (obedience) and / or C (protection service). As with normal examinations, a performance judge evaluates the performance .

In addition to the cup fights, there are championships. A distinction is made here between the competitions of the individual breed associations and the all-breed events. Only dogs are presented in IPO 3. The breed associations of the working dog breeds (e.g. Dobermann , German Boxer , Malinois , German Shepherd ) organize their own German championships. Only dogs of the respective breed can take part. In addition to the championships of the breed associations, the German Dog Sports Association (dhv) offers championships for all dog breeds, the German Championships (DM) of the dhv. For this one has to qualify through various events of the member associations. At the German Championships of the VDH , the best dogs of the respective breeds and the dhv meet to determine the team Germany for the FCI World Cup with the best six .

Mondioring

A variant of the Schutzhund sport is the mondioring sport or ring sport , which is neither recognized by the FCI nor - in Germany - by the VDH. Although there are no FCI tests in this sport and no entitlements to the title of International Working Champion (CACIT) are awarded in mondioring, there are International Test Regulations for Mondioring (IPO-MR) approved by the FCI. In neighboring countries, outside of the Mondioring, there is also the French Ring, Campagne, Belgian Ring and KNPV (the tests of the Royal Dutch Police Dog Association), although these sports differ from one another. Mondioring includes, among other things, the simulated attack from the front with a stick (whereas in mondioring, in contrast to protective work, the dog is not beaten, but is only threatened), guarding an object chosen by the judge and defending the driver.

The general difference to the protection service is that the work is done on the costume, which completely protects the figurine, in contrast to the arm in protection dog sports. Another difference is that the dog never attacks independently in the mondioring: Despite provocation by the helper, the dog may only attack on the command of its dog handler or if the dog handler is physically attacked.

Demarcation protection dog - protection service in the state dog law NRW, civil severity

In the dog law for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , a distinction is made between training as a protection dog and training in protection service. The associated administrative regulation states: “Training to the detriment of humans or to become a guard dog is generally the responsibility of official institutions (service dog administrations) that have the necessary cynological expertise [...]. The training to become a protection dog or the training to the detriment of humans should not be confused with the protection service or sports dog training of the dog. In protection service or sports dog training, only the dog's prey drive is stimulated and its already learned subordination (obedience) is checked, especially in instinctual and stressful situations. This protection service or sports dog training must always be preceded by the so-called companion dog training , in which the dog learns to follow the hearing and visual signals of its owner comprehensively and to react safely and calmly to environmental stimuli. ”When training dogs for civilians - and property protection for guard services, on the other hand, is trained to civilian sharpness, as with guard dogs.
