Schwedenschanze

The Schwedenschanze is the remnant of a medieval ring wall in the town of Kelsterbach at 100  m above sea level. NN in the south of the German state of Hesse . The wall lies at the upper edge of the Kelsterbacher Terrasse , an eight-kilometer-long and up to 17-meter-high stepped area of glacial origin. The area with the Schwedenschanze is today about 850 meters north of the Kelsterbach town center, on the edge of the Kirschenallee, opposite the confluence of the An der Schwedenschanze street , to the west of the municipal swimming pool area.

Badge of the city of Kelsterbach at the Schwedenschanze

It is often wrongly assumed that during the Thirty Years' War under the Swedish King Gustav Adolf, the Kelsterbach Castle, the Wolfenburg , was shot at from here - hence the name. The Schwedenschanze, however, is the remains of an early medieval fortification, probably built between the 8th and 10th centuries, which was fenced off and used as a refuge . The designations “stone house” and “old house” have been handed down for the complex, there are no documentary records.

The oval fastening ring of the Schwedenschanze measures around 55 meters by 40 meters from wall crown to wall crown, the interior of the wall around 45 meters by 30 meters. The walls and internal structures were probably made of wood. The access from the west was created artificially in 1860 when the interior was used for singing and gymnastics festivals.

Monument protection

The area of the ramparts is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, random finds must be reported to the monument authorities.
