Gernsheim Castle is a lost moated castle at Schöfferplatz in the west of the city of Gernsheim in what is now the Groß-Gerau district in Hesse .

history

After the possessions of the Lorsch Monastery fell to the Mainz Archbishopric in 1232 , the moated castle was probably built in the following period to secure the territory and occupied by castle men. In 1276 Rudolfus castellanus was first mentioned as a castle man. In 1298 the castle was the official seat.

In 1366 Frank von Kronberg acquired the lien over half of the castle and in 1428 the Archbishopric Mainz sold the castle to Johann Kämmerer von Dalberg . In 1460, the Archbishop of Mainz, Diether von Isenburg, sold Gernsheim with all associated rights to the Counts of Katzenelnbogen with the consent of the Cathedral Chapter City, Castle and Customs . Count Philipp von Katzenelnbogen installed his bailiff in Gernsheim.

After further changes of ownership, the Mainz collegiate feud and the Thirty Years War , the castle was razed , finally destroyed by French troops in 1689 and later the ruins were used as a quarry to rebuild the city.
