The Swiss bobsleigh run in Europa-Park in Rust is a steel roller coaster of the type bobsleigh run by the manufacturer Mack Rides . It is located in the Swiss themed area of the park.

First part of the journey

The roller coaster opened in 1985 and was the manufacturer's prototype of this design. In contrast to other roller coasters, bobsleigh runs are largely not track-bound , but in a channel made of steel pipes , similar in shape to an ice channel. The driving experience is therefore also different, depending on the load, the trains swing more or less to the side in the curves, which creates a significant lurching. Due to the length and many sections of the train, this is less noticeable than with similar systems from other manufacturers that use single-unit wagons. Only in the brakes and the station does the train run on rails. Special elements are placed in front of these sections of the route for threading.

The train goes around and over a faithful replica of the Swiss mountain village Chandolin , which was built a few years after the train. To do this, the last helix of the track had to be relocated and another curve built into the track.

The Swiss bobsleigh run has five trains with six cars each, although only a maximum of four trains can be used in regular operation. Two people can be seated one behind the other (two rows of one person) in each car. The wagons are designed like bobsleds from bobsleigh , with each train having a different color and flags of a different nation.

The following trains exist:

  • "Switzerland" (red)
  • "Suisse" (red)
  • "Germany" (green)
  • "Italia" (white-silver)
  • "France" (blue)

A chain lift is used to drive the trains to the 20 meter high lift hill . In order to achieve a maximum capacity of 1220 people per hour , several trains can always travel the route at the same time , secured by a block system with block brakes. Classic shoe brakes are used as brakes.
