The Swiss pondweed ( Stuckenia helvetica (G. Fisch.) Holub , Syn .: Potamogeton helveticus (G. Fisch.) Walo Koch ) is a species of the genus of the spawning herbs ( Potamogeton ) in the family of the spawning herbs (Potamogetonaceae).
features
The Swiss pondweed is an evergreen , perennial herbaceous plant . The rhizome is usually 2 to 3, rarely up to 8 millimeters thick. The stem of this underwater plant (submerged plant) is up to 4 meters long and heavily branched. The leaves are stiff. The lower leaf sheaths are inflated and up to 6 inches long. This species does not produce flowers or fruits.
The Swiss pondweed resembles the comb pondweed ( Stuckenia pectinata , Syn .: Potamogeton pectinatus ), but is stronger.
The flowering period extends from June to September.
Occurrence
The Swiss pondweed is rarely found in the southern Rhine Valley as far as Lake Constance . Here it can be found in the bank area of nutrient-rich waters. The species is believed to be critically endangered. It is a character species of the Ranunculetum fluitantis.
Systematics
It is possible that the Swiss pondweed is a hybrid of filiform pondweed ( Stuckenia filiformis ) and crested pondweed ( Stuckenia pectinata ). Sometimes it is only viewed as a variety of the crested spawn herb.
