Josef Holub was mainly active in the fields of taxonomy and nomenclature of vascular plants .

He was familiar with various methods; However, his work is characterized by the plant-sociological method, which is particularly evident in his contributions to the mapping of vegetation in the Czech Republic and Slovakia .

An example of an order that the biologist had a major influence on are the Lycopodiales ( Lycopodiales ). His services also include the development of a classification for the horsetail family ( Equisetaceae ). Other genera on which Holub made extensive studies are worm ferns ( Dryopteris ), Lastraea and Thelypteris . Most recently he worked mainly on the genera Rubus and Hawthorn ( Crataegus ).

Josef Holub was one of the main authors of the flora of the Czech Republic and the flora of Slovakia.

One of Holub's achievements was to have carried out one of the first studies on threatened species in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. His contributions led to the first edition of the Red Lists for these two countries.

Honors
