The filamentous pondweed ( Stuckenia filiformis ) is a species of the genus Stuckenia within the family of the pondweed plants (Potamogetonaceae). The thread pondweed is a freshwater aquatic plant.
description
The thread pondweed is a perennial herbaceous plant . This underwater plant (submerged plant) has rhizomes rooted in the water bed , which are thin and richly branched. The stem is thin and forked at the base. The floating leaves are submerged, 5 to 20 centimeters long, 0.25 to 1 millimeter wide, almost hair-shaped, gradually narrowing and have a rounded, blunt tip. When young, leaf sheaths are fused in their lower half, 8 to 27 millimeters long and closed at the base.
The 2 to 10 centimeters long and interrupted inflorescence protrudes above the water surface. The stem is 4 to 12 inches long. The fruits are 2.2 to 3 millimeters long and 1.5 to 2 millimeters wide, elliptical, unkeeled and greenish.
The flowering period extends from June to August.
The number of chromosomes is n = approx. 39.
Occurrence
The filamentous pondweed is widespread in the northern hemisphere . But it also occurs on Hispaniola and from Ecuador to southern South America. In Germany it is seldom east of the Elbe (not in Saxony). In contrast, it can be found in the Alps and in the Alpine foothills . It colonizes nutrient-rich lakes and streams up to altitudes of 1,800 meters. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises to an altitude of 1802 meters on the Schrecksee in Bavaria.
It is in the variety Stuckenia filiformis var. Alpina (Blytt) thorn the eponymous species and character species of the Alpine spawn society (Potamogetonetum filiformis) from the association Potamogetenion pectinati. The variety Stuckenia filiformis var. Filifornis occurs more in societies of Ranunculion fluitantis.
Systematics
The first publication took place in 1805 under the name ( Basionym ) Potamogeton filiformis by Christian Hendrik Persoon . The new combination to Stuckenia filiformis (Pers.) Börner was published in 1912 by Carl Julius Bernhard Börner . Some authors also differentiate between varieties or subspecies.
