The Pankow swimming pool is a former public swimming pool in the Pankow district of Berlin on Wolfshagener Straße and is located right next to the Pankow summer pool . It was opened in 1975 in the GDR as the “most modern and largest indoor swimming pool” in East Berlin and became part of the city after reunification . With the founding of the Berliner Bäder-Betriebe in 1996, this facility managed all of Berlin's pools . Due to dilapidation and lack of money for renovation, the swimming pool was closed in 2000, since then the building has been falling into disrepair and vandalism has resulted in further destruction. - There are plans for the demolition of the ruins and the construction of a new multifunctional pool and a primary school as well as the expansion of the playground on the entire area of the summer pool.

Swimming pool Pankow (1975)

The indoor swimming pool was built right next to the Pankow outdoor pool, which opened on July 9, 1960, and was designed as a prototype by the architect Gunther Derdau , who implemented several variants of this indoor swimming pool type in East Berlin. It was opened on February 7, 1975 after a twelve-month construction period and was the most modern and largest in East Berlin at the time. The indoor swimming pool comprised a 25-meter swimming pool with five lanes, a 100 m² non-swimmer pool and a teaching pool with a depth of 0.80 to 1.20 m. In the basement there were changing rooms, shower rooms and a sauna. In 1996 the Berliner Bäder-Betriebe (BBB) took over the indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The outdoor pool was renovated and reopened in 2001 as the Pankow summer pool . The initially planned renovation of the swimming pool was not carried out due to the high costs; it was closed.

As of 2018

The district office Pankow put 2018 a feasibility study before, after pulling down the hall and to be replaced by the construction of a multifunctional bath. In addition, a primary school is to be built on the site and the existing playground on Wolfshagener Strasse is to be enlarged.

According to this study, the development plan should follow, but this was delayed due to requirements for nature conservation , traffic , noise and contaminated sites . According to the responsible building department of the district office, this planning procedure can now be completed in 2021 at the earliest. The new bath complex, consisting of a leisure pool, sauna with garden and sports pool (which will also be used for school swimming) is planned with a cost of 42 million euros in the district budget. In addition, a three-class elementary school with a Zweifelder sports hall will be built on the site. The completion of the entire construction project is planned for 2025 at the earliest. Until then, the existing summer pool should continue to be used, the ailing swimming pool must be demolished first. In addition, an exchange of space between the bathing companies and the State of Berlin is necessary.
