The Scilla was built under construction number 4402 at Fincantieri in Castellammare di Stabia and was launched on September 22, 1984. After delivery to the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiene, the ship began the ferry service between Villa San Giovanni to Messina and from Civitavecchia to Golfo Aranci in March 1985 .
In April 1999 the Scilla was briefly in service on the route from Brindisi to Durazzo before returning to its old route. The ship has been operated by the Bluvia shipping company, which belongs to Ferrovie dello Stato Italiene, since 2002.
The Scilla has two identical sister ships , which are also in use on the route from Villa San Giovanni to Messina: The Villa , which was commissioned in 1985, and the Logudoro, which was commissioned in 1989 .
