Sciuro-hypnum populeum (synonym Brachythecium populeum (Hedw.) Schimp.) Is a deciduous moss species from the Brachytheciaceae family .

features

This moss forms soft, light green to green, often extensive lawns. The creeping trunks adhere to the base with brown, tufted rhizoids and are almost pinnately branched. The slim, mostly unbranched branches that become thinner towards the tip are about 0.5 to 1 centimeter long. Stem leaves are 1.6 to 2.1 millimeters long, with an egg-shaped base pointed awl-shaped, not or hardly wrinkled and slightly hollow, the leaf base on the stem slightly sagging, the leaf edge flat or rolled in the lower part, with the edge sawn at the tip and simpler , rib reaching to the tip of the leaf. Branch leaves are slightly narrower and shorter than the stem leaves. When dry, the leaves are close-fitting, moist, upright and protruding.

The linear-rhombic lamina cells are 32 to 56 µm long and 5 to 8 µm wide in the middle of the leaf, shorter and wider at the base of the leaf, rectangular to square. The cells of the leaf base and the leaf wing are hardly different.

The moss is monoic and is often fruitful. The 1 to 1.5 centimeter long seta is smooth below and warty-rough above, the spore capsule is inclined, elliptical, high-backed or symmetrical, the capsule lid is pointed. The fine papillae spores are 14 to 18 µm in size and mature in winter.

ecology

Sciuro-hypnum populeum grows in mostly shady locations, especially in humid forests, on rock rich in bases or rarely on gneiss, furthermore often on walls and concrete as well as on bark on the base of deciduous trees. It is often associated with other mosses such as Brachythecium rutabulum , Hypnum cupressiforme , Anomodon attenuatus , Homalia trichomanoides or Cirriphyllum crassinervium .

distribution

The worldwide distribution particularly includes the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere. In addition to Europe, it occurs in parts of Asia, North America, and North, Central and South Africa.
