The Scorpidiaceae are a family of moss - order Hypnales .
features
The plants are usually medium to large in size, sometimes reddish in color. The stems are irregularly or regularly branched. Central cord and hyalodermis in the trunk cross-section may be present or absent. The leaves usually have a simple rib and are often sickle-shaped. Lamina cells are linear and smooth. The seta is elongated and smooth, the capsule usually inclined to horizontal, curved and (short) cylindrical, with a complete peristome . The species are diocesan or autocratic.
Occurrence
The distribution includes the northern and southern hemisphere and extends to moist or wet habitats in the temperate to arctic and sub-Antarctic as well as tropical-montane areas.
Systematics
The representatives of the Scorpidiaceae family were traditionally assigned to the Amblystegiaceae . According to more recent findings based on molecular data, the two families Calliergonaceae and Scorpidiaceae were split off from the family Amblystegiaceae .
The Scorpidiaceae family now includes 4 genera with 12 species:
-
Hamatocaulis , 2 species in the northern hemisphere
- Hamatocaulis vernicosus (Glossy Sickle Moss)
- Hygrohypnella , 3 species with Holarctic distribution
- Sanionia , 3 types
- Scorpidium , 4 species
