Scott Nydam (born April 9, 1977 in Denver , Colorado ) is a retired American cyclist .

Athletic career

When Scott Nydam - already over 20 years old - took part in a quadrathlon in New Mexico , he got to know racing cycling. From then on he kept fit with cycling and decided to become a professional. As a result, he quit his job in January 2006 and started racing for the American amateur team Rio Grande Sports Garage . In his first year in 2006, he finished third in the sixth section of the Cascade Cycling Classic and won the mountain classification in the same race.

In 2007 Nydam became a professional with the American Continental Team BMC Racing Team , for which he had already had his successes at the Cascade Classic in 2006. At the Tour de Georgia 2007 , Nydam was seventh in the third stage and was able to occupy sixth place in the overall standings. He also took a podium on a stage of the Tour de Toona and won the one-day race Patterson Pass. Later he was also successful with his team in the team time trial at the Giro del Friuli Venezia Giulia and again conquered the mountain classification at the Cascade Classic.

In 2008 the BMC team received a license as a Professional Continental Team . In America's biggest race, the Tour of California , Nydam also started and won the mountain classification here too. In other races in the USA, Nydam also showed his potential with top placings, for example in the Tour de Nez . He also competed in Europe and came second in the mountain classification of the Tour de Wallonie in Belgium .

At the beginning of 2009, Nydam was thrown back from two serious falls that resulted in brain injury. Although he won the Tour of the Battenkill that season and came second in a criterion race in Copperopolis , he ended his active career as a professional cyclist at the end of 2009 on the recommendation of the BMC team doctor. He then assisted the team doctor Max Testa and helped his compatriot “ Jock “Boyer looking after the Rwandan national team .
