Scotty Wiseman
Scott Greene "Skyland Scotty" Wiseman (born November 8, 1909 in Ingalls , North Carolina , † January 31, 1981 in Gainesville , Florida ) was an American country and old-time musician, who mainly with his wife Lulu Belle gained fame on the radio as Lulu Belle and Scotty .
Life
Scotty Wiseman was born in North Carolina in 1909 and made his radio debut in 1927 with WRVA in Richmond , Virginia . He got his nickname "Skyland Scotty" because of his homeland, the Carolinas, which were also known as the Land of the Sky . Before his marriage, his repertoire was mainly limited to the traditional old-time music of the Appalachians. He accompanied his singing on the banjo or on the guitar .
After Wiseman had worked at WMMN in Fairmont , West Virginia in 1929 and graduated from Fairmont State College there, he joined the cast of the National Barn Dance from Chicago in 1932 . The popularity and wide audibility of the show also increased Wiseman's fame, which ultimately led to a record deal with Bluebird Records in 1933 . In the same year he teamed up with Lulu Belle and married her a little later. With Bluebird only two singles appeared from Wiseman, who signed a contract with the American Record Corporation (ARC) in 1934 . The first record for his new label came out with The Whippoorwill Song b / w Keep A Horse Shoe Hung Over The Door .
In his first year with ARC, Wiseman had his first hit Homecomin 'Time in Happy Valley . Other hits followed with Lulu Belle, with whom he also appeared in other national shows such as the Boone County Jamboree or the Grand Ole Opry . The duo achieved fame primarily through radio, the most successful medium of the depression in the USA, and also got the opportunity to appear in films - starting in 1938 with Shine On Harvest Moon . With Lulu Belle, Wiseman also wrote a classic of country music, which was also to become one of the first country songs to attract attention in the pop world. Have I Told You Lately That I Love You has been covered by Gene Autry , Marty Robbins , Jim Reeves , Ricky Nelson , Elvis Presley , Eddie Cochran , Red Foley , Bing Crosby and many more.
In 1958, Wiseman and Lullu Belle retired from the music business. Scotty Wiseman died in Gainesville, Florida in 1981. In 1971 he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame .
